I was a reporter at the Denver Rocky Mountain News. My colleagues and I at the News, and the reporters at The Denver Post, certainly "stayed on" in Denver covering the Columbine shootings. At the News, we broke a lot of important stories, and weathered subpoenas and investigations against us as we uncovered information. The Post filed successful lawsuits for documents, as did the Columbine victim families and 60 Minutes - which I think has its offices in New York.
I stuck with the story and wrote a book that came out on the 10-year anniversary, Columbine: A True Crime Story.
And I would add that Chardon is in some ways similar to Columbine: Both are small towns/suburbs that are typical of school shootings.
