Here we go -- the forums have bashed Penn Twp, SAVES, Barlow and New Oxford in the paper in the passed month. Might as well start with Alpha Fire Company too.

Maybe if you are accepting of their decision if they choose to demolition the building and not be critical, maybe just maybe they will build a building similar to other fire station/community centers. I don't think the membership of Alpha Fire Company will turn its back on the community. Be proactive and work with them in this venture.

And this post will say I'm from Dover and that is only because I'm working there at this moment. I'm really from the Adams/Hanover area

I think it is fine to expand, Alpha is a big VFD and very active. Just dont trade a good building and skimp on equipment. Keep good trucks running, good training and get the guys minitors and limit that siren - I know you'll all jump down my throat but the truth is it doesn't need to go off for every call. A nice station downtown will improve property values and perhaps one of the vacant buildings owned by someone else can give space as a tax write off for the library?

Ok, out with the old in with the new! This area needs and deserves a state of the art library system with a new facility or there are several vacant buildings to use in the downtown area. How large of space is needed to house the library? Ask the backer of the Casino to help support the community and make a donation since he wants to give back to this area. Let's do several things here: 1) build the casino in Germany Township between 194 and 97. 2) Use the Kingsdale property as a park and Community center (with funding help by the casino to host the fairs and other events) 3) build a new state of the art fire station near Kennie's Market area. There is plenty of parking at Ace Hardware if needed. Since the community center will be where the Kingsdale property is now, there would be no need for large community room at the firestation itself.

Oh what to do with the old station and other building? tear them down quickly before they become an eysore like other buildings in Littlestown or see if there is any grant money to rehab the buildings into adult living or assisted living retirement housing. Sell the out buildings and land over to the school system so they can expand the Middle School.((the area the hold the carnival since it could be held down at the Kingsdale site)) Another community project that could help the area and create jobs (1) jobs in construction (2) jobs in upkeep and care of the facility,(3) more job skills for local workers,(4) a place for school age students to Volunteer. OH AND FOR THE PEOPLE THAT WANT KINGSDALE still open: build them a new station down on Georgetown Road next to the pond.

As a member of Alpha F.C., I was in attendance of the meeting where we voted to accept the Borough's donation of the building for these reasons: Our bathrooms, social room, and storage facilities are all located in the borough building. Had the Fire company not accepted the offer, who knows who would have taken over the building. The truth is, there are NO plans to demolish the building right now. We did it so that we could continue to operate the services that we currently operate. As for the library, girl scouts, Jaycees(which I am also a member), and the other organizations that use the Borough building... we are not sure what is going to happen to them but people need to quit bitching and start using their "spare" time to work on a solution for this "problem". The Borough, Fire Company, and Community Organizations all need to work TOGETHER and come up with a solution. Lastly, the membership accepted the Boroughs offer after they dropped the stipulation of keeping the library, etc.. because the Fire Company is currently not prepared to be a Landlord- we can't get enough people to volunteer at fundraisers let alone volunteer their time for upkeep of the borough building. Also, our town should be more concerned about getting the community organizations into a decent building- have any of these people been to the borough building lately??? It's not one of the best places around...and correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the building technically condemned??? If so why are these organizations still there???
Just my few cents.

There are several buildings in Littlestown that should be condemned! But why haven't they? Let's have our FIRE DEPARTMENTS contact the State Fire Marshals office and start doing some inspections! Hasn't NSP-80 been enacted here in PA? A very STRICT Code if not mistaken. ALL PUBLIC access buildings are to comply and be brought up to code, no exceptions! ALL FIRE RATED EXIT DOORS that have or should have a label on it is to be inspected each year! It is does not meet standards, SHUT IT DOWN! Give the owners 30 days to make needed repairs, waiver up to 90 then condemn it and tear it down then send the owner the bill. The word will get out to fix your problems NOW. There is no reason for rental buildings in Littlestown to have the visable wood rot able to be seen from the street below the fire escape! WHO OWNS THIS BUILDING on South Queen Steet? FIX IT! THE Borough needs to maintain what they have or stop spending money on a nice little circle to make themselves feel good. Pass rules int he town that make it a better township and safer!(but don't exempt yourself or the school system) PASS RENTAL INSPECTIONS RULES! CHARGE A FEE! PAY someone with the certifications to do the inspections!

While it is sad to see an old building go, I understand that sometimes it is more cost effectice to rebuild instead of repair- especially if more space is needed. As for a library/community space, what about some of these empty stores near the square? Wouldn't it help with the Littlestown beautification if the library were to move into one? The Ltown library isn't that big.

True, there are several vacant shops in town, but the builings are in worse shape than the current one. As for Sheets, why are they expanding? it is hard enough to get in and out of maybe they should have looked down near Kennies and moved there for better access. The word is from Royal Farm Store in email to me is they are looking at an opening of this location sometime in early 2009.

Daniel - Hopefully the ole hillbilly fire guys never have to come to your house to put out a fire. Don't be an idiot. We appreciate our fire company and our community. As they say - if you don't like it there - LEAVE.!!!!!!!
