The article states... "Officials say federal grant money has made Adams County adults healthier, children brighter and the homeless warmer".

What reliable method of measuring these outcomes was used? It's obviously merely the opinion of "officials". At least with sewer projects, and such, we can see the tangible results of the use of our tax dollars.

Personally, I hope those more nebulous programs are never re-instituted.

Yea, no editorializing there is there? I would add besides disgusted - I am insulted.
Cut all the programs! Cut! Cut! Cut!
Maybe the next generation will learn to live without their hand sticking out.

What part of we can not afford to keep spending money we don't have don't you people understand? Most of the people who are complaining are welfare junkies, and don't pay their share any way. We need programs which reward people for going to work and getting off welfare. This will only happen by reducing the handouts, removing all the lazy from the rolls. Then people with real needs can be helped. So many people are now being hurt because we have encouraged them to sit back and let the government help. Ask the Indians how much better off they were after the government helped them.

I may be wrong, but Littlestown turned to the community to fix Crouse Park since a federal grant would end up costing the community more than the amount that they would receive from a grant. Maybe other communities should do the same. It may take some leg work, but it could pay off in the end. Individuals and communities need to start taking care of themselves and stop relying on the feds. I for one don't want my fed tax money going to areas of the country that I will probably never see.

We need to go back to the days of, "Community helping Community"? We have become a society where the future generation has their had out for anything they can get. Big government needs to go away. They have enabled this society way too long.
Ronald Reagan had it right! Big Government needs to be trimmed!

Shure, they do! This is how they grow more dependant people, who are likely to vote for democrats.

Further, if federal grants are accepted for ANYTHING, federal rules have to be followed. How else could they get their tentacles around us?

Cut Social Security and Medicare while your at it! They need to go. Why should MY money go to support a bunch of old people, who failed to take care of themselves and save from their future? I am happy and honored to take care of my parents, but that is it.

Everyone should get ready--because this is the fight that's going to start playing outself out ALL around the country soon.

It's basically what's happening in Wisconsin.

For too long, politicians have just spent, spent, spent--sneding money back to their home districts, stealing money form our future generations, running up the credit card bill, with no cash in the bank account.

Well, so the American people are finally catching on that this poses a REAL threat to us--to our national security, to our sovereignty, to our way of life, to our kids and grandkids.

And in response, we've started demanding politicians make the tough decisions -- we voted in people we believed might actually be willing and able to do it.

Everyone knows and agrees that governemnt needs to stop spending money it doesn't have. In theory, we're all on board, we're gung ho about it, in fact.

But the problem comes when you get into the details, and specific budgets/programs have to be cut.
And then you hear the entitled mindset at it's finest: "Yes, we need to balance the budget--but not at the expense of the POOR HOMELESS PEOPLE!"

In fact, you can fill in that blank with anything you want:
but not at the expense of__________
-the arts
-poor single mothers who need a hand
-our children and their education
-the space program
-our roads and bridges and infrastructure
-our national defense
-our student loans
-my social security
-this pet project in my home town I love so much

All these "sacred cows" -- EVERYTHING is essential and noble to someone. There will ALWAYS be some group of people crying and yelling over their lost entitlements.

Dems are GREAT at this game--they love playing the "gotcha" politics. "Oh look, the big bad evil Republicans want your kids to go without food, education, or healthcare!"

And the Republicans do it, too--"Those sissy libs are soft on our enemies and won't give our soldiers what they need."

Well, it's time for people to quit crying and to suck it up. Time for us to make and accept those hard choices, even if it means the loss of a program or budget or department we support or THINK we need (we don't, we don't). It's time to start paying the piper, because if we don't start NOW, we'll be Chinese-owned in the next decade or so. Mark my words.

And besides, if the average American family has to sacrfice financially in order to make ends meet, in order to keep a budget balanced, then so should govt. ESPECIALLY when you consider that
the fact is, all this money is OURS (the taxpayers') to begin with!!

We need to remind them of that as much as possible --otherwise, they'll continue to spend recklessly and without restraint and doom us all.

(same basic question--to cut or not to cut, and to what extent, and how fast)

CUT, CUT CUT. Then when we get spending under control we can get the programs back. And hey all the people who do not want to cut make a private donation. That is how all these programs should work anyway. Get the goverment out of all this "special" crap.

Always cutting at the bottom. The fat cats just don't get it. The cutting needs to start at the top and not the bottom. How many of these fat cats have volunteered to take pay and benefit cuts to help the less fortunate ? None I know of!

They paid for your education and your children's education. Maybe if your parents had paid for your education and you paid for your kids, then those "old people" would have had more money for their future. BTW they paid into SS and Medicare too.
