I have a friend whose husband is in the middle stages of Huntington's disease,a fatal neuro disease similar to Lou Gehrig's.Since they know that it is passed on in about 50% of the offspring of someone that has it,it baffles me as to why these people take chances on condemning their kids to death by having them in the first place! I mean: if it's passed on genetically and you know that ahead of time, the only way to break that cycle is to ADOPT kids rather than having some!Geeze!

It would be like a woman with aids having children. You know the children are going to be born with it.

Why THESE people? While medicine & science advances daily (gender selection & developing the perfect human), it's a mothers choice to take on that responsibility. I suppose Helen Keller, Stephen Hawking & Christy Brown were born before their time. Proper testing would've prevented them from ever being born, right? We've learned great things from those people... they've surpassed what healthy "norrmal" people have done. While you see it as selfish, I see it as selfless. It's mass undertaking for parents, who give up their lives to help these children thrive. In order for a child to know what they're missing as for "quality of life", they've had to had it first, wouldn't you agree? You have perfectly healthy children daily who sit mindless on an Xbox & take utter advantage of their capabilities. If you've ever seen the light beaming in a diabled childs eyes, perhaps you'd get it. Even with technology...some things should be left alone & this is one of them. A mothers love isn't dictated by their childs abilities, but instead by their heart & the nature of being a mother. It's a choice only the strong can make & endure. Not yours or mine.

Its amazing some of the crap that come out of peoples mouth. my mother has the braca 1 gene. it can be passed from her to her children. but wow. wait !!!!!! im 30 years old and have been tested for it and dont have it. read about things before you speak on them. Thats like a man trying to explain to a future mother what child birth feels like. gets your facts or shut your mouth.

Too bad we can't test for a dumbass gene. Maybe some of your mothers wouldn't have reproduced.

Personally if I knew I was a carrier I would never have children. It's unfair to subject them to a lifetime of misery and suffering. As far as medical advances, I've seen people who have been guinea pigs for those medical advances because they had no other alternative. What they went through before they died was criminal and amounted to medical torture. If any of you ever saw anyone in the last stages of Huntington disease you would feel the same way. Lou Gehrigs disease is not linked to a genetic abnormality but I was in the hospital once with a woman who was in the late stages (2 years after diagnosis) of the disease. She had been a Rhodes scholar and English professor at a St Louis university, and could no longer talk, she weighed 51 pounds, and they would have to come in every hour to suck the mucous out of her throat because she would have drowned in it otherwise. You can talk about medical miracles all you want and I will tell you that you are naive, I've seen what those miracles can do to people and it's a death no one would wish.

Personally, aborting a child for "imperfections" is something I would never do, but there again...this isn't about me.

By the way, I know of 2 mothers that were unaware they were HIV positive until after they were pregnant.....their babies were born WITHOUT HIV, and are tested every year...and are still WITHOUT HIV. So please educate yourself, dont just assume mother passes it to the newborn.

You know... I have met several people with genetic diseases that affect their daily lives. For the most part they are able to live somewhat normal lives. Now while I am not familiar with this particular child's diagnosis, I do know this. God has a plan for each and every child conceived. This young man, I'm sure has been an inspiration to his classmates and others in the community. He no doubt has taught others about disabilities and overcoming adversity. In my opinion, this mother blessed the world with a miracle, regardless of what her plan was. We shouldn't judge others decisions to raise a family. Judge our individual decisions to ourselves and let everyone else be.

Abortion is between a woman and her body NOT a political device. I think abortion is a crime against humanity BUT it does not concern me so I butt out. If abortion is a sin and there is a greater power then it is the woman who will answer for the crime and not me.
