In reponse to HISTORIC PERSON.....

The house, The Gilbert Mansion, is not "gone" and you have incorrectly indicated. It still sits where it ALWAYS has magestically overlooking the City of Little Falls.

The house is simply magnificent. Also, it is for sale. Perhaps it's out of your price range which would explain your outlandish comments.

I just walked past it 2 weeks ago. It's still quite firmly planted on it's hill.

Wow, what a fantastic home. If only there was a reason to live in LF... other than the affordable housing.

I just realized that there is no Dolgeville Creek. There is E. Canada Creek (in Dolgeville) and a restaurant slid into it last spring http://www.metacafe.com/watch/172949/restaura...

the Gilbert Mansion isn't even near that (E. Canada) creek. It overlooks the Mohawk River and isn't in ANY danger if sliding in.... 1/4 of the town stands between it and the river/canal.

My FIL tells me it is owned byt he Govt. of Qatar? They've taken great care of it!

To: Little Falls Fan -
Whoever you are please stop making FALSE statments on this website about Gilbert Mansion. It is NOT owned by any government and certainly NOT by the "Gov't of Qatar" as you have so very incorrectly stated. I'm sorry things are SO bloody boring for you in Hagerstown, MD that you have nothing better to do but spread gossip on the internet....Who is your "FIL" who told you this moronic lie?

Good grief! Why so defensive???

I said it once with a question mark. Someone else has hijacked my (former) name and posted below my posts.

My FIL told me who owned it and I assumed he was correct as he is a neighbor. Did you even notice the ? I put at the end as implying that I was not completely sure? A simple response clarifying would have been far more mature than slamming me.

If it is not true, I apologize, but please don't call me a moron or accuse me of trying to make trouble. My information came from a reliable source. Either he is mistaken, or someone here is.

Now I must return to my bloody boring life that is not in hagerstown at all :)

Little Falls Fan:

Your friend is INCORRECT. The home is owned by someone who lives in Washington, DC. You really should not post information such as that on websites unless you are 100% positive it is correct.

Perhaps, the other person was "so defensive" because your comment/assumption was so way out in left field that it was almost laughable.

By the way, if you don't live in Hagerstown, MD...perhaps you should correct your location as it currently says, "Hagerstown, MD"..

Far too often back in Upstate NY I've heard of a grand old property (and sometimes its a neatly kept farm) which is owned by "some Sheik" which always elicits a good laugh.

Not sure if the people passing along bad info really think what they're saying is valid at all or they are just wishing to add some drama to a quiet community.

The property is on loopnet.com and the photos they use make it look lovely. However it deserves to be on more then just a 2-acre lot.

I remember back in the 70's, up near Boonville, NY (on State Route 12), there was a large former Dairy Farm that was supposedly owned by a person or persons from the middle east (maybe Iran?). I believe the owner(s) raised arabian horses there... There were all sorts of stories at the time about what was really going on at the farm and the fact that there were supposedly armed guards on the property, etc. The property is now home to Nirvana, Inc.(a natural water bottling plant).

Maybe that is the property that Kellsboro Jack is thinking of?

Re-read my remarks (or take reading for comprehension) I never said "advertised" now did I? Rather I was speaking about people who cite X property or Y farm as being owned by a royal family and the like. Just to make a property all the more mysterious or add drama which generally never exists.

Actually if you look at one of the early postings on the thread you'll note I provded another source "for all to see" of where the house has been listed before.

Calling me as one of the "busy bodies" - thanks I appreciate that.

Was the fact it was for sale a hidden secret? Gasp! Now the readers on this thread somehow can enter that elite private club of limited information. Such shock and horror with the unwashed masses knowing such things.

I remember that, he was supposed to be the head of the Secret Police under the sheik, prior to the Ayatolla, they built a barn that could milk like 400 cows and the thing burnt one night..and you're right, it is now Nirvana

Gilbert Mansion was purchased for the daughter. She currently uses the house. Her father is a member of a Middle Eastern royal family. I believe he is a prince. Her mother is American.

Looks like this blog has gotten completely off course by almost ALL of the posting parties... From the outside it looks like nothing worth while is going on in this place to talk about? Perhaps TOPIX should take this off and start fresh!

To make historical corrections to everyone reporting on this site. While the name on current public records might read one name, the actual occupant of the Gilbert Mansion is a LONGWORTH.

The Longworth family owned many estates in this area over the past 100 years also owning a considerable amount of real estate in Washington D.C.,Virginia and Ohio.

Recently, the Longworth family purchased a historic estate near Farmville, Virginia. It had once been owned by a relative of Thomas Jefferson. The estate was in terrible shape. They have so far, transformed the grounds and are in the process of opening it up to the public. I believe the entire estate has 200 acres.

The Longworth family is a very well known and respected member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
