The schools system here is mediocre in every measure of record. The community postures about how wonderful our schools are yet our graduation rate stinks, our kids have lousy test scores and we have a board that is a train wreck.
Old farts like me have been around forever. We know that LF has always been and will continue to be a community that celebrates mediocrity. Successful families are mocked and villified. Success here, especially financial success has always been treated as a bad thing. People in this town would rather have the community ruined by section 8 trash than have to deal with the threat of a successful generation of young families in this community.
Status quo above all else. You can mock my opinions all you want, but it is the truth. Welcome to LF!
Maybe things will change now that you've said something.

Who cares about test scores when we have a new playground!

When it comes to playing, the US is safely in the upper percentile!

You also have to remember that college has become so much more expensive. I am from this area, have a post masters degree and it cost be around 120,000. I have 2 teenagers in college and there is no help for the kids that want to try, but we can give others welfare every week while they sit home! Why not help the children with the money. I can barely pay my loans but my children's financial aid goes by my income even if they are 20. Then there's the individuals who are divorced or not married who don't report all the income and get school free plus more money. The system sucks is the bottom line.

Info, you should think about sending them to one of the local community colleges. The first two years are the same whether they attend Colgate or MVCC. I've had the privilege of teaching at a number of local colleges. The community colleges, without a doubt, are an absolutely wonderful value. A great way for the kids to cut their teeth on a little bit of freedom close to home and save some money.

I'm a product of all SUNY schools and I'm just as licensed in my profession as people who went to ivy league skills.

Our schools do a huge disservice to our communities. Everyone in the world isn't going to be a doctor or a lawyer. So why set them up to feel inadequate.

My favorite example is the machining certificate program at MVCC. In 18 months we are producing people ready to go to work right out of the gates. We literally have 19 year olds walking into Remington making 16 to 20 bucks an hour. My point is there is tons of opportunity and we shouldn't expect our children to always take the fairy tale way to adulthood our krappy public schools try to force them into taking.

Do community colleges teach proofreading?
Or, is that only available at Ivy league skills?

We've got a country full of people with Bachelors degrees in English, Literature, Sociology, or Fine Arts, people who paid $150,000 for the degree and are working in McDonalds.

Meantime, have you tried hiring a carpenter, plumber, or electrical service technician lately????

Trade schools and Community College, people.

Yes, it is sort of strange. Stalking someone on the internet is usually something you should avoid.

I will say you can get an average education level in a place called the "Valley" you figure you the boundaries and report the numbers, it's not much different from the census.

I only ask for the education level, because I would love to see it improve.

Too many people in the area like to "talk" as if they know so much, and I would like to see action in the area, to ensure the "Valley" is improving.

Talking about things you don't know about is not the exclusive domain of the Valley or the uneducated. Happens everywhere and educated people arguably do it more than anyone else.

Come down off the mountain and mix with mankind.
