There is a letter posted at the top of the (unhelpfully-named) "Blah Blah Blah" thread. The letter purports to be from the library manager and contends that various artifacts have been illegitimately taken from the library, perhaps for personal gain (or at least without proper procedures).

I can't find any reference to this allegation anywhere else (local media, eg) and the original poster has apparently gone to ground.

Does anyone know what's going on? I support the library every year with a charitable contribution but am unsure what's going on (and whether I need to find out more before writing any more checks...).

I've been equally concerned.
And like you, I've searched every day to find some corroboration...
I've found none.
I hope it is a hoax !
For, what is described is criminal.

The "Blah, Blah" heading on that thread...
seemingly hasn't attracted many readers.
Thanks for putting a better name to it.

There is the same letter in this weeks Mohawk Valley Express from the librarian expressing her concerns in this matter. I am also appalled that these items were removed and want to know where they have gone. I would certainly be interested in the Abe Lincoln invitation for historical purposes, myself.
I hope we get some answers soon from these people.

Glad to see there's still interest in this story. It seems rather odd that Marietta Phillips would put the heading of her letter under 'BlahBlahBlah'...I skipped it at first thinking some nut job was trolling Topix. It doesn't look like we will be hearing from her again, though the can of worms is at least open now.

Anybody know if she's still working at the library?

I was told that there will be a response from the Board and related articles in the Evening Times, Telegram and MV Express this week that will answer all of the concerns of the community. Most likely tomorrow.

I believe her last day was last week some time. I hope there is something that can be done about this although it is too late to get the artifacts back by now. No one is going to sell and tell. Plus, some of the artifacts are probably hanging in a private room in some of their homes.

Only three items have been removed from the collection: A flag and invitation sent to auction via contract with the Library and a selection of sheet music given to a local not-for-profit.

Puh- Leez...
Why would you say it is too late to get them back ?
Didn't the item say it was the board members ?

I don't think the item was posted by Ms Phillips.
The original thread started out...
"And I quote...", or something similar.

Here's the item... Aug 23... MohawkValleyExpress

Thanks for starting a thread.

A few days ago I emailed the Library and Marietta P. responded.
She said it is not a hoax. But, I can not imagine anything inappropriate getting past Marc. He's the curator, and I hear quite a watchdog.

Somethin's fishy, Ishy.....
I do agree with you about Marc. He runs a tight ship there. I like that in a librarian. Marietta is also very nice.

There are several letter to the editors published on Thursday regarding this incident. What do you expect with a mercenary such as Linda Vincent on the Library BOD.

I haven't found them (other than the identical one from the library director, posted in the MV Express). Can you provide any links? Thanks!

Here is the letter from the Times:

"Former LF Library Director: I'm sorry - I would like to thank the wonderful staff members at the Little Falls Public Library for all they do to serve this community and preserve its history. Until last year, the library was the proud keeper of many historical artifacts ranging in age from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War era. This collection included things like a hand-sewn 13-star flag and an invitation to Abraham Lincoln's Inaugural Ball. Although uncertain of the origin of the flag, the origin of the invitation was clear, it was sent to the Petrie family and the envelope was clearly marked "save for museum". These items were housed on the third floor of the library and only brought out for special displays. In December of 2008, I became director the libary and informed the current Board of Trustees about these amazing historical artifacts. Until my disclosure of these items, the Board had no idea of their existence. My intention was to collaborate with the Historical Society and do a joint display-maybe even housing these remarkable artifacts at the museum.
Apparently, the Board of Trustees decided these items were not historically significant to the area and voted to have them sold at auction. Many more items have been removed from the library with no record showing what the items were or who took them. I asked the Board to adopt a policy for removing items from the library and after some back and forth debate, they agreed to a basic sign-out sheet to be kept at the circulation desk. In July of this year, a board member, along with a couple of other people, removed several boxes of items from the library and did not sign-out the items. When I questioned the Board President about the practice of board members removing library property without signing the items out, he assured me that if the items were not being returned, there was no reason to sign them out. I don't agree with that concept and cannot accept it. I have resigned from my position and accept the responsibility for the significant loss of historical material that took place because of my actions.
If it wasn't for me and my big mouth (indiscreet speech) the Board never would have known these items were here. The staff protected these items for more than 100 years and it took me only a couple of months to blab about them and now they are gone. Please, residents of Little Falls, accept my deepest apology. It was a pleasure to serve the fine citizens of this community and to work with such a wonderful staff. Marietta Phillips"

BUT THEN...
The Evening Times article about it...
seems to whitewash the situation.

In it...
Phillips resigns due to the decision to auction items.
My reading of her letter...
Phillips resigned because the board stole the items.

Am I wrong ???
