A recent ET item spoke of a United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development agency program which has $80 million in grant money.

Link To USDA's NY site:
http://www.rurdev.usda.gov/ny/

Although the Times article sounds as though it is up to the Herk IDA to make something happen... the program specialist is pleading for anyone who has a good use for funds to come forward.

Individuals can apply.

This is a link to the various USDA programs:

[Look at fourth item on first page]

Don't expect the IDA to respond to LF's needs...
They have the whole county to worry about.

I email the contact person last week when I saw the story and it's suppose to say "limited funds" only if tied into a certain projects. The paper got the info incorrect.

Real nice. I think it's a full time job just looking into things like this.

That's one of my main points...
There are lots of small opportunities...
Little Falls needs to compete for all of them...
It will take local volunteers to do it...
It is not worth hiring an outside consultant.

There are classes...
Free... and... Un-free...
Which will teach proposal writing skills.

Even on the BIG projects...
The ones that Carlson... and now Avalon...
Are hired to prepare...(for big $$$)
I think...
Could be done by local folks.
Amongst 5,000 souls...
with lots of willing volunteers.
It shouldn't be THAT difficult.

Avalon gets paid out of the grants they win. That's how the contact was set up. Doesn't come out of tax payer monies in the prep work. That was asked last year at a common council meeting and the gentleman explained how he got paid.

UR looks for a lot of grants for the city to apply to.
Most cities look for the grants but have a professional fill out as if you add the incorrect info or word incorrectly you don't get the necessary points to be award the grants. It's a lot more difficult than you think. Look at a grant application, you will see.

1. It does come out of tax dollars. Just not local dollars. We should remember that.

2. Avalon specializes pretty much in CDBG grants, no? That is just one narrow slice of the grants that are out there. But a lot of other grants don't allow for admin, which means they don't get paid, which means they won't write the grant.

Exactly why I worded it to say they don't get paid for the prep work.It comes out of the grant. If you had someone in city hall doing it you would still have to pay them which is tax payers money.I'm not following your point except to pick apart words.

I'm pretty sure that CDBG is the major source of funds they write for municipalities.

Gotcha. I brought that up because of the threads talking about getting volunteers to write grants. Pros want to get paid, and that usually means a grant that covers admin or overhead. A lot of grants, especially from private foundations, don't.

Here's a link to a NYS grants newsletter.
http://assembly.state.ny.us/gan/
It is updated monthly.

The January 2010 issue...
Link to it: http://assembly.state.ny.us/gan/20100101/
announced $11 million in grant money...
In part for municipal consolidation.
Deadline... Feb 24 !!!
They come up fast... and close fast.

OBVIOUSLY... I'm trying to make a point.
Here's a link...
Mohawk Valley Heritage Corridor...
It says... in part...
'Most funding opportunities have short deadlines for submitting applications. Organizations should develop project plans for future funding by having their project descriptions, scope of work and tentative budgets ready so they can act quickly when funding becomes available.'
They also have a DIY guide.

So... FYI...
You'd be saying that half a dozen different proposals are coming off city hall's shelves to compete in the $80 million USDA's Rural Development request for proposals ?
Give or Take ...

They are various grants being applied for at different levels and different sources.
Some are feasible studies, some Brownfield, some shovel ready to name a few.
Let me pose a question back at you, what makes you feel this isn't being done without you prompting?

It because of hope...
It seems there has been lots of grant money available.
It seems LF has not been getting alot of it.
I hope that if LF got it's share...
OR MORE...
That the situation would not be so bleak.

When I go to Herk IDA...
Or... the NY 'shovel ready' site...
Nothing for LF is mentioned...
Like... you are not in the loop.

AND...
Because I can't find any documents of LF online.
No planning... no development...
No minutes of meetings...
No nothing...
AND...
Because I can't find any email addresses...
for the elected...nor board... members.

Whereas for Herkimer County...
I can find home addresses...
email addresses...
Documents and minutes of the legislature...
And of committees.

It... is almost like...
Little Falls doesn't want input...
doesn't want community involvement...
doesn't want the community aware.

Unfortunately the city does not own the web site and therefore has to go through a third party to update and has to pay for updates.I agree they need their own site so info can be added quickly and be updated weekly.

I also read the article and emailed them in regards to buying the building of the sunrise cafe and the clip joint,it says it is for rent, which indeed is not.I have contacted the owner and made me an offer, but was very interested to see the grant help,,They had emailed me back and told me it was not that type of grant and sorry it was misleading in the article, perhaps someone should be cautious to what they type in the paper. It was very misleading to a few people..How sad this town could seriously use some help with all the old building being left empty. Someone like me would love to make a difference and help others, yet I dont have that kidn of cash. Its sad another building in this town to fall down and be condemned..like half the town..they focus on revitalizing main st,..well start with half the damaged eye sores..they only focus on making the post office and the bank look good..the rest is a disgrace.BIg M wouldnt have to go under or be threatened to go under if someone actually fixed the dumpy shoppers square up with the money instead of hanging a damn flowering basket outside on the lamp post..oo way to go now we look good..You cant complain about loosing businesses and getting no business if you make little effort to improve it..I like having a close knit family surrounding, but I am sad to say that Price Chopper will not struggle if they come and take over..they will offer more jobs and have a competitors pricing..Big M is very expenisve because they are the only one in town.,maybe they should start to think about that now..And for the whole main st first or grant/loan in the paper why dont our lovely town take out a grant or loan and repair some roads outside of town..there is more to little falls other than main st..drive down 170 in the winter,,hell even in the summer is as bad..or yellow church rd,,you will loose half your vehicle..sidewalks in town are broken up on church st..fix that fix pothole,,stop wasting tax payers money on a flower basket and lamp post..
