I don't know who wrote this piece, but for crying out loud, the word is CONJURES.

A CONGER is an eel.

Is the Telegram hiring people who don't find a dictionary useful?

Forget it...with the advent of spell check and the abandonment of proper elocution as a core element in education, the word conjure is as dead as the language from which it was derived. Sloppy enunciation is here to stay. I am sure that many who read the article knew the intended meaning of the word conger but would have had to scurry to find the definition of the unfamiliar word conjure.

I assumed it was a Telegram article, but it wasn't. However, the criticism still stands. I love the language and wish those who write for a living did, too.

I WISH people would take some pride in doing a thing well. Since when should the whole world aspire to mediocrity, in this or in any other endeavor? If you're satisfied with low standards, you share the responsibility for a decaying civilization. Good luck with that.

taking pride in posting on topix and pointing out miniscule errors is contributing to decaying civilzation! hell you should have been a comedian! if i am going to take pride in something it will not be here. it will be with my family or work. you obviously have no family, your too busy posting about typos contributing to global warming and world peace! this world is far from decaying, on the other hand, your not...

Apparently you failed to read the post. When you make your living with words, you do yourself and your readers a service to exhibit at least a passing familiarity with the language.

Guess you don't spend a lot of time reading. BTW, do you have the same high standards when it comes to doctors and plumbers?

You're fighting a losing battle. Any type of literary or language skill is rapidly succumbing to the Digital Tower of Babel. Zuckerberg is our God and Topix is his Prophet.

i do spend lots of time reading. but, i do not make a living at it like you stated in prior post. you need to change standards because the mass population will never live up to yours. you'll never change, what a pity for you...

"To die on Topix, that is euthanasia." ... paraphrasing the words of Ambrose Bierce as reported by Carlos Fuentes.

No one is perfect, and most of us make an occasional spelling or grammatical goof, but when I read something as full of spelling and grammar mistakes as this piece was, I simply do not take them seriously, nor do I take their research seriously. And if it is published, that tells me that the publication and the editor are not to be taken seriously, either. It comes as no surprise that an article so full of grammatical and spelling mistakes is also full of factual errors as well. In fact, that is what one would expect. Bottom line: if you write like an idiot, expect your writings to be received like the writings of an idiot, because they are.

As long as we are discussing idiocy, anyone care to comment about making an approach march to an enemy who knows you are coming, into a defile, without sending out any scouts ahead and without having any flanking parties out on the sides of the main marching group?

I have read that the late general wanted to stop and do recon but hotheads in his column called him a coward.
