I have yet to see an adult there who isn't one of the other parents. I am at the pool almost everyday and I have witnessed on 4 seperate occassions that the lifeguard who is watching the kiddie pool just gets up and walks over to the lifeguard watching the deep end. They stand there chatting for almost 10min before the kiddie pool lifeguard comes back...that is a major problem and one that doesn't make me a "nutcase parent"!
I agree. So why are you talking about it on Topix? Say something to the lifeguards right then and there or immediately go to their supervisor. If this is a safety issue (and it seems to be if what you say is true), it should be addressed immediately and not bantered about on Topix.

Yes, the real issue here (assuming that what you're saying is happening is really happening) is that the adult in charge of those teenagers is not properly managing them. Start there.

It's Monica, what do you expect? If it's not field hockey, she doesn't care. She is supposed to oversee the park program too, but is only around when they take trips because her kids want to go. Heard she was on vacation this week too...hard to supervise when you're not even in the same state as those you are supervising isn't it?

I have also witnessed this same thing. But it is only a few of them doing this. Not that it makes it any better because it doesnt. But there is a few very good lifeguards.

I go to the pool every day. I enjoy it. The lifeguards do their job superbly. I have seen them save at least six people. I have seen them practice saving people and they do it well. Their supervisor is not incompetent she is well qualified for her position. Everything that goes on is safe and supervised and upto protocal. Sorry if a teenager wants to have a little fun and throw a friz or a ball. Give em a little slack.

I think the problem are the dirt bags that go to the pool who are loking for someone to watch their kids and not pay attention themselves. When pool goers show up with alcohol on hand and complain about the lifeguards being ignorant, look in the mirror. It takes a real big person to run their mouths on a website. if you have real issues with the lifeguards take care of it, "LIKE AN ADULT", not like the so called college kids your mocking and knocking down. As far as an adult taking control and being a lifeguard, put in the hours yourself and get certified and take your own advice. you have the right as a public to express your concerns, so grow a pair and take it up with the right people if you have a problem, other wise keep your mouths shut. Also as a parent you should be watching your kids, lifeguards aren't babysitters, they're there to help your children and you from life threatening situations. As far as throwing Frisbees at pool goers and across the pool, i know for a fact that that is not a true occurrence.

I agree with Regular Visitor. The kids seem to be having fun there and no one is getting hurt because the lifegaurds are doing their job..and doing it well. But as usual, the parents will find something to bitch about even when there is no real problem..

You really have nothing better to do than to sit and gripe about these lifeguards? They're not there as a babysitting service, they're there to guard the pool. And the supervisor is not Monica, she has nothing to do with the pool, so leave her be. She's runs the park program, not the pool. You all would bitch if they were strict as hell too. You do know it's your choice to go right? If you don't like it, simply stop going.

I don't get it. There was constant complaining on here.."Oh we aren't going to have a pool" Now there is constant complaining. Keep it up and there won't be a pool. I don't know what you people want. The kids are probably more safe at the pool than some of them are at home. When a 35 year old live in boyfriend can lock himself and a little girl in a bedroom and stab her to death, it's too bad the little girl was not at the pool.
She would have been safer.

Most people are not trained in water rescue. That's why God made lifeguards. This is like saying, "Most people just show up and expect the pilot to fly the plane because they're too lazy to do it themselves." Duh!

Notice: It's the adults that don't have jobs that are bashing and verbally abusing the well-mannered young adults. You have to realize, the city pool is a privilege. You should be thankful that the lifeguards are great kids. They don't go for a marlboro on their breaks, they are generous, and they were completely successful in every save attempt this year.... It's called jealousy. For those of you who wrote these nasty posts, look it up on wikipedia. Considering "jealousy" has more letters than the number of teeth you have, you probably don't know what it means.. Some of you are also complaining about the pay. Why dont you put down your potato chips, get off the couch, and get a job. You're stealing the taxpayers money. I wonder where you got your computer.. Or are you at the public library? If you record lifeguards on duty, and your phone falls in the pool, you're screwed. Dollar general raised the prices of cell-phones to a whopping $19.99.

I was on the board of a private swim club.
The lifeguards were to be in their chairs...
Rotating to a new position...
or, on break away from the pool.
There was no talking...
No interacting with the swimmers except 'for cause'.

It was no holiday for them.
Safety of the children was THE only consideration.

Private pools are different than public ones. The guards are allowed to swim and do whatever they want on breaks. Why don't you all just stop attacking them and just leave them alone.

Yours is probably the most ignorant post of the thread. You equate people being concerned with how the life guards do their jobs with people not having jobs and a bunch of other stupid things. The job of the life guard is to watch the swimmers period. It's not to talk or text on their phones. It's not to flirt with each other or chat with their friends. Their job is to make sure everyone is safe. It's a place of business even if it is at the pool. They should leave their phones at home. They don't need them at the pool. And no matter how much they are paid no one has the right to complain since no one forces them to take the job.
Parents who take their children to the pool or let their children go to the pool have every right to expect that the life guards are more interested in the safety of the swimmers than they are about being on a phone. If any of the life guards think its just a stupid summer job then they shouldn't be there.

Nonsense. Utter nonsense. Tax-and-spend fools like you are ruining America. A team of certified young adults ... like we have ... is perfectly fine for lifeguard duties at a municipal pool. If the OP has a problem with the situation on the ground, he/she needs to take it up with Monica; this is a matter of either a parent over-reacting, or a need for the director to direct. But do NOT try to blame this on the young adults who are serving their city, and do NOT try to push your tax-and-spend nonsense either.
HAHAHA! I take it you are one of the lifeguards or a parent of one.A parent over-reacting? Seriously? You have here many parents witnessing the same behavior from the lifeguards so obviously its a problem. Is risking a childs life over-reacting when parents are witnessing the mgmt of the pool being poor really over-reacting. Also nobody said a thing about the previous life guards in past years. Some certified RESPONSIBLE young adults are completely capable of this job. Just not these ones.

A public pool, and it's employees should be held to a higher standard, not a lower one.

What does that have to do with them doing what they want on breaks?

Go to college. Get a degree. Live on the edge of glory just like lady gaga. Or sit on the computer all day. We all know who's going to be more successful. You wonder why all of kids who grow up here want to get out of the county. It's because of people like you. So go dance to party rock anthem, smoke a cigarette, have a beer, and mind your own business. Later haters
