Well, I see there is a new building going up to replace the one that burned this summer.

They are using a company from the finger lakes area!
Seriously???????? I think there are alot of well qualified contractors locally who could have used the work.

I dont care if it was a bid process. keep your tax dollars/insurance money local, only makes sence. They have a weekend promoting shopping local on main street.

Wow...
You think they should NOT take the lowest responsible bidder?

Isn't the shop local program an MSF inititive?
I mean... it isn't "THEY", the city.

Job should have been done locally. Lowest price should not be the only decision point. Better to keep a local business in operation. Better for all of us, in the long run.

But don't mind me, listen to this pollyanna from NC who has no stake, whatsoever, in the future of our city.

This is the same kind of mentality that sends manufacturing jobs to China. But UTLT is an Obama lover so it makes sense.

The problem with NOT awarding a job to the lowest responsible bidder...
is that it add a SUBJECTIVE element to the decision.
Which can be misused, and abused.
It allow the 'good old boys' a license to enrich friends.

HERE... one of largest grocery stores... BI-LO...
defines LOCAL PRODUCE...
as anything grown in the five states in which it operates.

DEFINE WHAT LOCAL MEANS!

Local doesn't mean North Carolina, for example.

I'd assume LOCAL wouldn't mean North Carolina.

But it is an interesting idea...
For anything which LF puts out for bids...
The city will accept that bid which is from that company whose main office is closest to City Hall.
Total cost will not be a consideration.
Measurements will be made using Google Map.

Is that the idea?

And your local Piggly-Wiggly defines local pork as what's sitting in your chair!

Most local contractors and consultants won't even respond to an RFP from the City of Little Falls at this point, or if they do, they have to crank in a 50-200% Difficult Client Factor. They have to, if they expect to stay in business. LF is the sort of client you really really don't want...they sort that can put you out of business.
thanks

Thanks, Jean. It's amazing how you know so much. I'd bet dollars to donuts a local contractor would be happy to get the contract.

Dollars to donuts??? Take my advice,,,don't gamble, and especially don't bet on things which have already happened, OK? Either the City is being corrupt about awarding the contract (if so, please feel free to show evidence of that) or no local guy was willing to do the job for price at which someone far away was willing to take it on.

So, which is it? Local government corruption, or my take? I'd be more than happy to be proven wrong once again, OK?

Well, the City built Asbestos Mountain with the lowest bidder. And they seem to be quite satisfied with the results. Having a massive junk pile right downtown certainly puts a strong underline to the City agenda of turning itself into a slum, one has to admit.

Was the contract properly put out to bid? If so, did any locals bid on it?

Maybe some big firm from out of town took it on a below cost bid just to help cover overhead and avoid idle equipment?

But as usual you have jumped to wild-eye conspiracy-theory conclusions (e.g., a difficult client mark-up vs. corruption). In a competitive bidding process, you cannot always explain the reasons for a low bid. Maybe the out of town firm owns equipment that a local would have to rent? Maybe they are bidding below cost to cover overhead?

My understanding is that the insurance provider has a contract with certain companies to perform these jobs. Those people travel around to do these jobs.Probably the same with Price Chopper and Stewarts for their work in the future around here.City probably has no say. Then again if they did get someone local they would get lambasted on here for getting the wrong guy, then that wrong guy would get lambasted, etc.Do you see where I'm going?

Local would emply someone who pays taxs in little falls.

And the other problem with low bid is it nocks the hell out of quality. I agree there needs to be other criteria besides low bid to award the contract.
