Zoo Atlanta's Next Ten Years

Twenty-five years ago, Zoo Atlanta was ranked as one of the worst in America. Now, it stands among the best urban zoos in the country. via WXIA-TV Atlanta

The Atlanta Zoo was indeed one of the worst in the country under the maynard jackson administration while shirley franklin was budget manager. The zoo was so underfunded the animals were deprived of medical care and proper nutrition. The local news media exposed the conditions and documented that the underpaid zoo keeper was killing surplus peacocks to feed his family. Surplus petting zoo animals were fed to the alligators to keep them from starving. National publicity spurred mayor jackson into increasing the budget, however reluctantly. Corporate sponsorships saved the zoo and built it into a world class facility. The corporations insisted on accountability of donated zoo funds to prevent the corrupt and inept city government from squandering the money.

Maynard Jackson's term was marked by corruption, political infighting, lack of overall city progress, and Jackson's personal racism against whites and against blacks who cooperated with whites. Jackson tried to demolish Cyclorama but was stopped by a hugh public outcry. Private funds were collected to perform a major restoration that now brings in millions of dollars for the city. The zoo fiasco was the fault of Jackson and now mayor Franklin. The incredibly bad water sytem was well known to Jackson and was totally ignored. The water system is now being renovated at a multi billion dollar cost under threats of millions of dollars in environmental fines. Franklin is like Jackson. She doesn't make progress unless someone sets a fire under her. High crime, poor city services, crumbling infrastructure, racial politics, and widesperad corruption are all earmarks of both the Jackson and Franklin regimes.

Atlanta needs a new mayor if it is going to survive in the 21st century. New blood and new leadership will be necessary to move the city ahead and realize the full potential of Atlanta. It's time to get away from the corruption of mayor franklin and her anti white racism that is keeping the city from returning to an efficiently run metropolis. Downtown attractions like the zoo, World of Coca Cola, The Atlanta Aquarium, and hundreds of private businesses should be available to citizens and tourists alike. Shirley franklin's attempts to keep the white population from regaining the majority are hurting Atlanta's future and crimping healthy growth. It's white people who have the money, the business expertise, and the morality of good citizenship that are good for Atlanta.

It's amazing how people spout off about things they don't know anything about. Maynard Jackson wasn't even in office when the atlanta zoo was named the worst. Young was the mayor at the time. Mayor Andrew Young along with Shirley Franklin played an integral part in turning the Zoo around. Young along with others decided to turn the entity into a non-profit organization, which ultimately led to the Zoo's success. The Atlanta Zoo was not turned around by corporate funds alone. As those who posted earlier would like us to think, the city of atlanta and fulton county contributed millions to help turn the zoo around.

Maynard jackson ran the Atlanta zoo into the ground the same way he ran the rest of the city into the ground.
