Hi Everyone. I'm a one-time resident of Torrington who now lives in Florida. I have decided to post on here to see if I can find out a little about what you all think of the Torrington Police Department. I've started to launch my own "investigation" of them. In the interest of fairness,(I don't want anyone to say what I think they want me to hear...and if you're wondering, no I am not wanting to move back and work for the TPD), I won't disclose to you why I am "investigating" them. What I will say is that bad or good I would like to know what you all think about them. Also, since it's obvious to me that there are very few people from the Torrington area who post on this board, if you can get other people to come to this board and email me with what they think that would be greatly appreciated. Also, if any of you know of other local forums where I might be able to pose this question, please let me know. Thanks so much for your time.

Aren't they the people involved in the Tracey Thurman case? They stood back while her abusive husband threatened her even though she called the cops like 8 times... They didn't really take any moderate action until the guy stabbed her a bunch of times and then stepped on her head, leaving her paralyzed. Even then they didn't act accordingly. I'm not to fond of this police force...

torrington police are pathetic
they prey on the poor and the young
if they're not busting teenagers for a little weed, they're harrassing tax payers
last night a torrington police officer told me to "get out of "HIS" town"
i have lived here for 23 years and i am seriously distressed with the lack of respect the officers have for the pubic

One can easily tell from the TPD building alone that they really don't embrace the public. While TPD employees get all the plum parking spaces within the lot, John and Jane Q. Public are forced to park in the road. If it weren't illegal to force handicapped parking out into the street, I'm sure they'd do that, too. It's quite telling of how they really feel about public relations. It sends a clear message that they're there to serve themselves, not the community.
I, like others, have a story to tell and sadly, it's not a good one. CMW, it's been a while since you've posted so I'm not sure you're still conducting your investigation. If you're willing to share a bit more about your experiences and your intentions, I'd be a bit more inclined to be forthcoming. I think you might be quite interested in my experiences (I can barely believe them myself).
Meanwhile, suffice it to say that it's my opinion that Torrington is ripe for a police civilian review board (if anyone is interested, please contact me and I'll do my level best to work toward making this a reality). Although they have city-run boards (see more at www.torringtonct.org ), they're often headed by the mayor himself. Isn't this a bit like a kid investigating thefts in a candy store?
It's important to remember that, while we each have our own experiences, it's likely that there are many more stories out there. I encourage anyone with a story to speak up. There truly is power in numbers and by speaking up, it'll take the power right out of their hands and back into ours, the taxpayers. After all, we're the ones that foot the plowing bill for their cushy parking lot...

I have lived in Torrington 35 years and have needed the services of the police department several times. Once for when my car was broken into, another time when I needed advise about a complaint I had with a neighboor over land, and the last time when I needed them to work in conjuction with another state police dept on a crime in another jurisdiction. Each time their service has been exceptional. I find the officers and detectives to be very friendly, helpful, and in my opinion they get their job done. All of my experiences have been positive ones.

I have actually been arrested by the good 'ol TPD a few times, and every time they have treated me with respect (even when I wasn't so respectful back)I don't have any complaints against any of them

I just read their mission statement and "core values". They are a joke! We had an experience with an investigation they totally botched. No sympathy, no respect, no satisfaction, just lazy police work. We were totally disappointed and shocked that no matter how high we went up, no one cared.

Does anyone know how to get a copy of the television film that dramatized the Torrington Police handling of the Tracey Thurman abuse case? Is it rentable? For sale? Where?
Thanks.

...you'd know how to research this for yourself. In an attempt to give you the benefit of the doubt, I researched it for you. I discovered that it's pretty darned easy to find this video. If you can post here, you should be able to help yourself. GO FORTH AND RESEARCH, TEACHER! If this is an example of the research skills you set forth in your classroom, I pity your students.

I think this was an unfortunate situation for poor Ms Thurman due to some untrained or old fashioned "good ole boys" that lived where "the man rules" and thought that his wife was his possession and he could do what he pleased to her like they do in third world countries.I believe that because of this law a lot of women have been saved from creeps like this. But why did it take a law suit for 2.3million to make it a law in the U.S. God Bless America.

Many years ago I used to hang out with some of the younger ones...They partied like the ones they arrest. Had my bikini top grabbed off of me and thrown across the room by one of them. But ya know how it is...He apologized profusely so that was that. Beyond this I have had many people close to me not once obtain help or satisfaction from this department. There have been times when their complaints were so cut and dry with regards to who was in the right, and every time it was a blow off and lets side with the convicted scum bag parolee or his family with regards to the "tenant" issues at hand. I'm being vague for good reason, but lets just say their lack of professionalism spans the test of time. Good luck with your "research". All I can say is Kharma really is a biyatchhh. Success is really the best kind of revenge(-;
