I hate the 4th. When I was 7 a sparkler went through my arm! Still have the scar. A friend is blind in one eye. My neighbor had to get a skin graph done on his hand, & a couple of years ago, the grass was real dry, and a loose bottle rocket landed in my yard & caught it on fire!

And I thought my poor puppy had it bad!! She is just scared of the noise.

Well, for sure the Chicago lakefront fireworks show on July 3 this year was beneath pathetic. It started almost 15 minutes late, which only tells us that a bunch of so-called professionals were paid a huge sum of money to screw up. There was a total absence of patriotic music or associations, because a local rock radio station substituted its own small-minded, vanity-driven song selections. If there was any syncronization between the aerial displays and the music, you would never have known it because the beat of much of the rock music didn't permit it. I like Bon Jovi and K. T. Tunstall and the other performers a lot, but trying to match them up with fireworks just doesn't work. Even a Ray Charles singing "America the Beautiful" or The Boss singing "Born in the USA" would have been small consolations, but they were missing too. Where were the songs and marches that get people standing, dancing, clapping their hands, singing along and cheering? The 2008 Chicago fireworks show was a flat, sorry theme concept that should have been stomped to death before it ever got out of the conference room where the misguided people suggested it. The evening must have been a terrible disappointment to the families who came many miles to celebrate our country's birthday and enjoy a special teaching moment for their kids.

I do! I head out to Indiana to get a lot of my stuff. My neighbors all sit out on their driveways, and I head out onto the street to do the show.
( never been caught yet!!!)

We do the same thing. Went to a display this year, then set off our own. Had a much better time setting off ours than at the display.:)

This year I went to three sets of fireworks in Northern Illinois.

Stephenson County Fairgrounds, Freeport,IL

This is a great little (compared to Chicago) set of fireworks. They gave the show on July 3 in order to get more fireworks for their money. The fairgrounds have a stadium for people that don't want to sit on the grass. In front of the stadium they have curved park benches and lots of room for older people or the handicapped. There is a huge lawn, tons of parking and very patient security to help and direct traffic, both in and out of the fairgrounds. There are modern toilets and concessions that sell BBQ, ice cream and other food. The music was patriotic and the show lasted around half an hour. I am planning on going next year unless I can talk my hubby into going to Mt. Rushmore.
The second night, July 4th I sat in a store parking lot outside of the Speedway (N. Rockford) and watched their show. I really want to be inside watching some year.(I won't go into detail about why I ended up there, alone) I am sure they have music but where I sat I couldn't hear it. Some of their ground displays were pretty cool from what I saw. The only drawback for those with kids was the lateness of the show. Because of the races the fireworks didn't start until after 10:30 p.m. It was windy and chilly there so many left early. The neighboring area surrounding the speedway was full of fireworks purchased from across the border in Wisconsin. Illegal but usually tolerated. We watched the panorama while waiting for the Speedway show to start.
The third night we went to a party at a friends in a gated community. What I like about this little show is that they space the fireworks out so that you can see the "bombs" individually. The fireworks also reflect off the lake making double the awe.
We lived in Lexington, Missouri for many years. On the 4th they would have a stage show or talent contest.(kids from the community, etc...) and you knew when you saw the sky divers with red, white and blue smoke on their heels, that it wouldn't be much longer for the display. Some years we were lucky enough to have a Stealth Bomber fly over on its way to a big city. This was especially cool during the Civil War Reenactment. After the skirmishes and cannon fire, the Stealth would fly over. It was enough to bring tears. Just the difference between cannon shot and the newest technology in the sky was awesome.

Lived in Illinois since 1995. Since then went to Buffalo grove, Arlington Heights, Schaumburg, Elk Grove, Chicago and finally Itasca.

Itasca is HANDS DOWN the best I've ever been too, some years are better then others, but even a not so good year with Itasca is better then everyone else's best.(That I am aware of) We have family and friends that drive from Zion just for these.
