I am leaving L.I. next year. To answer the question. DRIVERS...It is the SUV / pickup drivers and BMW or high performance car driver. when it snows who is stuck - SUV's
When a car has a crash it is NOT the guy doing 70 in a 55 it is the guy doing 90 to 95..the LIE was made for drivers to do 65 mph the S.S. was
50 mph Doing 55 in the left lane is causing accidents people have to pass on the right - a lot better than putting you brakes and causing a backup- enought talking about dopes

Yes the roadways are old.

Yes they could have been designed better, maybe the engineers back then should have taken a course in Divination so that they could have foreseen the future.

But the future is now and we have the technology to make the roadways safer. And we don't have to pur a yard of concrete to do it.

All we have to do is enforce today's traffic laws and get the idiots who won't obey or can't obey off the streets.

And there will never be enough cops to do this so we need to revert to , whats the word?..... TECHNOLOGY!

We have the technology to monitor speed, to take pictures to assign blame.

All we need is some guts from our legislators to rewrite the archaic traffic laws and instill the penalties on the idiot, slob drivers that will either make them change their ways or get them off the road.

All we need is our legislators to get off their asses and install red light cameras like thousands of other municipalities have already and make the OWNER of the car responsible for the behavior of anyone they let drive it, be it spouse, or kid or friend. No more of this we can't see their face so we can't assign blame. If you want to register a car to drive on county, state or federal roads then you take the repsonsibility for how it is operated.

All we need to do is change the insurance laws and make the drivers accountable for the speed at which they are operating their vehicle and whether or not they are on a cell phone when they have an accident ( simple to do by dumping phone logs and installing black boxes in all vehicles). If you were violatin gthe law during the course of the accident, whether it was your fault or not, you don't get covered by your insurance.

Watch how fast people slow down and get off their cell phones then. Hit them where it hurts, in their wallets and sanity will return to LI roads.

And all without pouring a single yard of concrete.

Speeding cars and those blasted speeding "crotch rockets" that speed in and out of traffic on either side. You can be going at 60mph and cars will pass you like you're standing still. And forget about those speeding bikes....they're gone before you blink. You take your life into you hands when you go onto the parkways nowadays.

Todays drivers are the culprits! 1. Speeding 2. talking on the cell phone 3. fooling with the radio 4. Drinking coffee 5. reading a newspaper 6. Putting on make up 7. Drinking and driving 8. reading a novel 9. Road rage 10. Poorly trained young drivers. These are a list of why certain roads are hazardous. BTW, I have personally seen every one of these senarios !

Do we even need to question this? C'mon. It's the drivers who are to blame, not the roads!(if you say the roads are to blame for accidents, you should have your license taken away!)

The hands free cellphone law is never enforced.

It's a free for all.

Drivers seem to SPEED UP when they see pedestrians.

It's a moot point for me - just as soon as I can get out of this burboid pesthole, you'll see a smoking trail of shoe rubber all the way to the Queens border. But, the lack of regard for human life, esp. for the lives of children, sometimes make me wonder if this place is part of the USA at all.

If law enforcement would put the patrols on the road that they should, incidents would be reduced by a large number. If I can drive on the highway for any distance and see 7 people driving using cell phones, something is wrong with that picture.

Try the three basics: consideration, concentration and anticipation. These will help you survive the Darwinian process on our streets... survival of the most alert.

Drivers enjoy scaring the daylights out of pedestrians. Coming at them fast and stopping right at their leg, smiling up at them with an evil smirk.

But if pedestrians do anything to defend themselves, they're in trouble.

What are we going to do about this situation? Something must be done for pedestrian rights.

Pedestrians used to have right of way, now might makes right drivers think.

Everything you've said is true. That's why I only lived there for three years. I couldn't wait to move back to the South. You can have that crazy LIE and the BQE. The ppl will bless you out for no good reason except to be mean.
