Hi there!!!

It is a shame to hear about the Purple Hotel closing, I have had many fond memories of the legendary landmark hotel here in Lincolnwood from eating at the restaurants such as TJ Peppercorns and ETC., to staying in the hotel and swimming in the pool, and from celebrating my Bar Mitzvah party in 1993. My sisters also had their Bat Mitzah celebrations in the Lake Michigan banquet room downstairs.

Must have been some good times and fond memories at the Purple Hotel. It used to be the Hyatt, then the Radisson, and then the Ramada before it was called the Purple hotel right?!

Yep, that is true. And it was originally built all the way back in 1960, which was 48 years ago. Even though the hotel was older than I thought it was, it was first class all the way up until it was renamed the "Purple Hotel".

I remember the Bar and Lounge that had pool tables on the first floor, the chandeliers and dance floor of the banquet room, and the classy looking well carpeted floors throughout the hotel. Lincolnwood's only hotel was first class all the way!

So what caused the hotel to close last year? Was it due to poor ownership, health code violations, lack of cleanliness, deteriorating building, or a combination of all of those?

Your right Dee, it was a combination of all of those and the fact that the owner Donald Bae was a stupid idiotic owner who just let the hotel deteriorate, and did nothing whatsoever to fix the problems that the hotel faced. He just cowardly decided to close the historic landmark, an sell it off to some investment firm which wants to tear the hotel down. Bae must be a real moronic bum!

I hope that if they rebuild the hotel which might be in the works, that it looks the same and has the same ambience as the old one. At least that is what I am hoping for.

Would be terrific if it was remodeled, cleaned up, and rebuilt!!!

The rooms are full of mold. Tear it down and start over. It would cost millions to try and get rid of the mold. I believe the Fireside Restaurant used to be on that corner before the hotel was built. The hotel was built in the late 60's.

Actually, I would like to take personal responsibility for getting the hotel closed down. I was a bartender there while finishing my degree in construction engineering and project management. I was fired after my bitch manager lied to management and said that I was "discussing hotel business with guests," and then hired her sisters brother to take my place. Well, being in the construction world I am very familiar with what mold can do to a structure.. I promptly contacted OSHA, the Illinois Liquor Control Commission because they were selling full bottles of liquor for takeout off property, and marrying liquor bottles together, as well as a horrific fruit fly problem which I also let the Health Department know about. The mold problem is so serious and explains why the investors who considered buying the Hotel bailed out and Donald Bae still owns it. The city also issued stop work orders on renovation because it would cost millions to have the mold problem corrected and would require assistance from HAZMAT. Those idiots stepped on the wrong toes when they fired me. The hotel was closed down within weeks after my complaints to numerous governmental agencies. It also didn't hurt that I was technically a professional college educated construction guru who was quite familiar with OSHA regulations. Fuck those assholes. I laughed my ass off when I saw it close. I am still laughing today.

You are absolutely right. Donald Bae was not a hospitality professional. Neither were most of the staff. Rudeness, arrogance, no training, and nepotism were rampant. The building was a dump several years ago when I worked there. Imagine how it deteriorated in six more years. Holes in the carpeting. Mold in the ceiling over the pool. Rooms with sagging sofas. Insect infestations. No one wanted to stay there. The nearby Holiday Inn was nicer and cheaper too. So was a brand new Hampton at Old Orchard. |
