I just moved to Lincolnton and although I like the town, I can't find any good parks here. I've been to the one out on Buffalo Shoals Rd. as well as the playgrounds at the Lincolnton Rec and to the Rail Trail, and my kids don't like any of them.

Where I moved from, there were about 8 nice parks within 20 minutes of my home.

Can anyone recommend a good park 30 minutes or less from Lincolnton (I live near the Boger City community), whether it be a playground park or a walking park?

Many thanks!!!

The one on highland drive doesnt have any swingsets...its a bummer. Its all a very high traffic area where the speed limit is 35 but the drivers would tell you different. So its not safe for kids at all.

It does have a walking trail but as I noticed in another thread you feel uneasy about the crime rate ...I wouldnt wanna walk in a wooded area...just saying....

There is suppose to be a new "Greenway" I think its called coming soon that is suppose to connect all the major points in lincolnton...but I dont know seems like a waste of money.

The only other choice would be the walking trail near the pizza hut uptown area where you walk under the bridges and stuff.

I am not against a walk way or walking trail...just that there really isnt anything to see and if it was totally just you and nature thats easy pickings for any mugger.

and

http://www.greenways.com/lincoln

I think its been approved but the actual plan is going through the stages.

Its something to look forward to. 2010 in Lincolnton is gonna be a boom...if the bottom doesnt fall out (again) before we get there.

Have you tried the Betty G. Ross Park on Madison St. just off South Grove St.?
It has a gymnasium for racket ball, basketball, ping pone, swimming pool. It ahs outside, picnic tables, nature trail in the far left back side of the park,(behind the left ball field), 2 softball fields, two play areas with swings, slide board, monkey bars, and the such. There is a physical fitness thing you can walk around and do the things on the instruction charts. It has a tennis course but usually they are playing outside basketball on it unless you register for it and then you have it all to yourself if you do. IF you go on the trail, I carry mace just incase of wild animal or something, but, really I am not to worried about the bums, they leave you alone if you don't bother them (should you see any at all, during the day). It is a nice place for a good sunny day to hang out with the kids.

The one in Kings Mt right off of 74 is HUGE and it is soooo much fun. I am 22 and I enjoy taking the kids to it. Its right behind the YMCA and its in a fence to so you aint got to worry so much about strangers just walking up in there and the kids running off towards the road or anything. there are different styles of swings, and there is a big boat they can play in, a train, house, etc And there is a wooden xilophone (which i butchered at spelling) that they can play music on... There are covered picnic tables in gazebos. And its free it get into. Its the YMCA's park but its open to the public. Its right across from the Bojangles. If you are coming from Lincolnton, you go down 150 and take a left on 274. On 274, when you are coming to a sharp curve, you take a right onto 216. Follow 216 down til you get to the bridge that crosses over 74. Take a left onto 74 but stay in that lane, DO NOT go onto 74. When you come down that exit, take a right. As soon as you pass the gas station, the YMCA is right on your right. The Bojangles will be on the left, next to the ABC Store. I dont go to Lincolntons park or Cherryvilles park. The one in Kings MT is WAY WORTH the 10 miles drive. Its safe and fun.

Oh, and West Lincoln has a park now to. And next year they will have a splash pad for the kids so that they can play in the water. One part of the park is for toddlers and one is for the older kids. and they have a covered picnic area.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone! The one in King's Mtn. sounds especially promising.

Dallas has Gaston County Park....2 or 3 fishing ponds, playground, covered shelters, ducks, geese, a walking trail that goes around the entire park...there are also a few ball fields, tennis courts...etc.
Also more into Gastonia is Martha Rivers Park...the play equipment is in the shape of a huge castle and the kids really love it.

Thank you Selina and Almost Silent. The park you guys mentioned (Martha Rivers Park in King's Mountain) is the same park. I visited it today to scope it out, and you're right. It's one of the most awesome parks I've ever visited. I can't wait to show it to my kids. I am also looking forward to visiting the Dallas park.

I noticed that you said 30 miutes or less. Well, you can travel from one end of Lincolnton to the other and up and down Lincolnton in 30 mnutes.
So actually any of them in the county is driving distance for you.
It is not just the parks place to entertain your children. You are suppose to come up with ideas
to help them be entertainment.
For instance...
1- Don't just let them ride the swings, you can make it more fun by, you pushing them on the swings and tell them to try to go high enough to kick the trees. Let them use their imaginations they really can.
2- Race them around the ballfield bases and time them. Even take a ball and bat and let them hit. Kid love to hit, they just don't like it when you hit it and they have to chase it down. Let them get some good exercise this way and they do not know what you are up to.
3-Before you go to a park, let them pick out what goes in the pinic basket. Be sure to keep them hydrated or tey will wear out faster and not have fun.
4- Sometime before you go, also make a scavenger list and let them carry a basket or bag to put their findings in.(anacorn, a red leaf, a feather, etc etc.)
5-Just make it interesting for them by givig them all your attention and they will enjoy a park without a ride or toys for entertainment.
6-Take some bread along and lay it somewhere close by and see who's bread gets eaten first by a blue bird or a robin. Take some pecans and feed he squirrels. Just sitting there and talking about what they want to tal about is good for them also of course.
This is just my opinions and things my mom would do for us herein Lincolnton. Really we did not go that often to any park, except for a family gathering. We did however go fishing and playing in the pond on the farm without ever being bored.
I love Lincolnton and will never move from here.
But I am not going to just go out of town to entertain the kids at some park when we all seem to have a nice time at the South Fork Park or Betty G. Ross park when we do go.

I hear ya "Hi There" but all the pot smokers at Betty G. Ross kinda turn me off...that's where they go to "park" and get high. I know this to be a fact as I am very involved with teens in the area and this is common knowledge.

You know we have speed limits right? There is no way you can go from one end to the other with in 30 mins when you consider speedlimits, traffic, schoolzones or buss stops.

It takes me 30 mins just to get to the Denver Burger King. lol

Since this forum is about parks and not driving classes, I just will say, it can be done from Boger City, since she lives in that area, she said.

I live in the same area of Boger City. The place under my name doesnt reflect my real location.

Keep in mind she is wanting to go to a park with her kids. I dont think she wants to risk their lives just so they can swing or play in a sandbox.

I am just saying my drive going the speed limit from Boger City to the Denver Burger King takes me about 35-45 mins. Thats including stoplights and traffic.

One nite while i was walking thru the nature walk trail... well it wasnt really nite time, it was evening.. i was walking thru there and caught a couple having sex right off the edge of the trail. my ex (boyfriend then) told me to act like we didnt notice them and to keep on walking.. haha, yea right, i start laughing and yelling at them, til they got seriously embarrassed and pulled their pants up and ran off... but i have heard of ppl doing worse things on the playground and under the bridge... totally nasty. i mean, come on, these are little kids's toys!!
