The action of Congressman Steve Israel in fast-tracking neurosurgery for Sebastian Pina from Peru is a a truly humanitarian and worthwhile action. Unfortunately, brain tumors are really an "orphan disease" which require much more research attention and funding than they receive. The International Brain Tumour Alliance (IBTA) commissioned a study this year which identified that 60% of the 200,000 people (men, women, and young people) likely to suffer from the most malignant of all primary brain tumours in 2007, live in poor, developing countries. We need to improve the standard of care available to these people but in the meantime, as an emergency stop-gap measure, we also need to ensure that they have access to the palliative medications relevant to their needs, which is often not the case. This will be one of our priorities in 2008. Well done Rep Steve Israel! Denis Strangman, Chair, IBTA ( www.theibta.org )

Congressman Israel is indeed owed many kuddo's for stepping in on this situation... Can't help but wonder what sparked him... Given all that, he is intitled to a heartfelt "Thank You" and as we know, what goes around, comes around.. Health and Happiness to that little boy and all that surround him...

I am hopeful that the little boy will recover and go home to his family and enjoy a wonderful life.
However, there are many children in this country need help too and I very rarely seen a congressman/women step in.I rarely seen even a Dr, step in.
There are families who can not cover the cost of seeing their child have a chance at a long life, what about congress people or Drs. stepping in and helping those families?

Any caring person would've done the same thing. Who WOULDN'T help a child in need? No American I know. I applaud Steve Israel's efforts but they don't impact my opinion of him as a Congressman. Frankly, in congress, I have not seen him do anything truly spectacular. He seemingly 'goes with the flow'. When I hear him, or any other politician, boasting of the "federal money they got for their district", I just roll my eyes. Afterall, it was our money to begin with. Why jump up & down when the feds toss some of it back our way? Wouldn't it be better if we just got to keep the money here to begin with? I understand the need for federal taxes (national defense, etc), but don't expect a thank you from me when you use MY MONEY to build a road on Long Island.

I want lower taxes through smaller government. Let the states and localities invest in themselves with out the feds skimming some off the top first.

I see Mr. Israel as a fan of big government, which I oppose. He's also a fan of Intervention in other nation's affairs and seems too concerned with middle eastern affairs.

The U.S. needs to focus more on itself and less on other nations.

But good job with the kid, Steve. God Bless you, Sebastian.

Thank God for people like Congressman Israel. a few years ago when my wife and I had a problem we contacted both Senators Clinton and Shumer and to this day are still waiting for a response. Not with Congressman Israel though. He helped us the with the problem and his staff was in contact with us the whole step of the way until it was solved. Merry Christmas to you and your family Mr. Israel and may God continue to bless you.

As for those who do NOT contact congress, or the newspapers, or television, and who do NOT have health insurance ... well, they can die can't they, so that the insurance companies can make more money. It is the American way.

In a way maybe that is a good thing, if the powers that be are so far removed from the majority of people that they will never see 'it' coming when it does..........

This is a wonderfully heart-warming story. Let's hope this child has a full recovery and enjoys a long, wonderful life. Let's hope also that American citizens who lack health care, or who are having a very difficult time getting their carrier to approve a treatment, have such a dedicated public official in their corner, talking the powers-that-be into providing their critical care.

This little boy may live in peru but he is far from the lower class. He is not illegal because he has a visa. All the racists who think that the race of a person is more important than helping a little boy with a very aggressive brain tumor seriously have something wrong with them. Unfortunately all the ignorant people who think all illegals need to stay out of the United States will never change but just remember one day spanish is going to become 2nd most spoken language in the United States, so just you get ready Racists. Also they aren't collecting donations or anything so why would you try to put them down. This is such a christmas miracle but certain people in this world will never appreciate such things.
