People should recognize the difference between a right and a privilege to walk a dog on a county park. My son, who was 12 years old at the time, was mauled by a dog in a county park. Neither the county nor the dog owner paid his medical bills. Was it his right or privilege to be safe in a public place?

Dogs are fecal factories...they must be kept out of all public areas...and always off of beaches.
Cats are self-cleaning. How unsanitary to keep a dog inside your home. You don't have to be the commander of a spaceship to figure this out.
We remove our shoes and slippers before we
enter our homes but we allow our dogs to wipe their anus on our sofas, carpets and floors. I don't get it.

I like dogs but I have to agree with the ban. There are too many irresponsible owners that do not pick up after them. They spoil it for all the other owners. Our forest preserve even provides bags and people still don't pick it up or bag it and drop it in the middle of the path. It's aggravating to bikers & joggers.

Ban all animals from the parks and beaches because their owners are dirty and filthy! If you don't like it here, stay away and go away! Don't try to change Kauai into the place that you just left - go back there. This is not the mainland!

As a dog owner on Oahu who has been kicked out of parks and off trails with my (leashed) dog it just infuriates me that one more place has been taken away from dog owners.
We pay big taxes here and more and more we can thank our bureaucrats for taking our money and giving us nothing in return.
Dogs on leashes should be allowed to go anywhere walking in trails and parks. Enough already. Auwe!

This is just another example of how "screwed-up" the people of Kauai are. Here the County has spent $50 Million of tax payers money for a path that less than one percent ( a guess, admittedly) will use. It is constructed of material that we only wish was used for our roads that 99% of us use. It is a beautiful red colored concrete that will probably last forever . It reminds me of the bridge in Alaska that cost , I think,$50 million for a very small number of people to use. We could of sent them the Super-Ferries instead. And save Millions of dollars.
When Oh When are the people of Hawaii gonna wake up >

On Kauai a small economic minority, who are originally
from someplace else, are now whining that they can't walk their dogs on a $50 million tax payer funded 16 mile trail. Go fetch a stick somewhere else!

Many - especially those not from these Islands - don't understand the fragility of our isolated islands. Dogs are not allowed in county parks on the neighbor islands because endangered species often turn up there: honu, monk seal, nene. Even dogs on leashes can threaten these rare animals.
In addition to worries about biting, dogs poop wherever they want to, so taking them on trails, the shore and to the beach presents a health hazard to all, especially the children who play in the sand.
So please, for the love and life of the land, leave your dogs at home.

Why is it when ever I read from Kauai "Natives" in the forum all they want to say is "Go away" you are not from here. Do they not realize many many "Native" families have dogs and would like to be able to walk them. If people don't pick up after their pets give them a very hefty fine! For Jorge's comment above, I have yet to see a cat eat it's own feces "to clean up after it's self!" How do cat's sit if they don't put their butts down on your carpet? Too much hysteria in Kauai!

"Cats are self-cleaning. How unsanitary to keep a dog inside your home. You don't have to be the commander of a spaceship to figure this out."

Roaming cats poop in other people's yards all the time! My mother-in-law has no pets yet she has to clean up her neighbor's cat dung all the time.

If all owners of all pets took full responsibility for their impact on the neighborhood, we wouldn't need laws like this. But of course with so many slobs loose in this world, laws banning pets from common areas are a fact of life.

Let us point out that although the path is under the Parks Department supervision, a path cannot be considered a park and should have its own rules. It should not be included sumarily in the county park rules.

Cats vs Dogs...the never-ending debate. If we're talking about banning animals from public places due to a lack of cleaning up, then babies should be banned from the beaches considering the number of diapers I find in the sand and in the parking lots. Let's get real, folks; just clean up after yourselves and your pets/children!

The thing that makes it tough is, before it was a brand new paved trail it was a cane haul road that the dogs shared with everyone else.

I do understand the reasons for banning dogs from county parks in general. But it kinda seems like the dogs ought to be "grandfathered in" this time; find some way to accommodate "old" and "new" uses of this right-of-way.

Does Animal Control have a history of dog attacks on humans or wildlife in the area? That kind of info would be very helpful.

But, but, you know wot? As' wai hod nowadays, everything gotta be all ragulated and high-makamaka. No need one fancy trail arready, just one red dirt path with ironwood pinecones for poke my bare feet. Good enough for me in hanabata days; good enough for me still yet.
