Is Dollar General leaving Derry in the fall? If so, then the streets will be more deserted than normal.

yes, moving to driving range in west Derry, they wanted to rebuild at current location but was denied by local officials.....so there goes jobs and taxes, let alone all the folks who relied on this store. typical Derry politics.
this should effectively reduce traffic into ton by 1/2. maybe it's time for 1/2 the road crew and police departments.

The space has already been released to Family Dollar. So we lose one and get a better one in it's place.

Dollar General wanted to buy the property where the cabooses are. The Railroad Days committee who own the property refused to sell. That's what forced DG to find another location for a new store. Boro officials had nothing to do with it! Get your facts straight people.

Was at DG today and there is a sign stating that the building is for lease. If Family Dollar was moving in, that sign wouldnt be there. Where do people get their facts...local bars??

Not sure of a date but i do know that a whole new store has to be built for them to move into so i am guessing not anytime soon.

I was at the store this morning and asked and was told that the new store would be opened by the end of September.

I hope the news about Family Dollar is true. Derry needs some strong leaders to pull it in to the town it should and could, and used to be. I grew up in Derry, lived there for 18 years. I blame a lot of the drug problem there to lack of jobs, entertainment, or anything for our children to do. Derry Borough needs to get with the program. Although business creates a lot of traffic and may not fit in with the historic outlook they wish to portray... if we gave our kids some place to hang out, a place to work, a place to eat, a place to play, etc, etc, etc there'd be a lot less kids sitting around getting high out or boredom and depression. I know there's not much space, but they need to make the most of it and expand on what we do have, not discourage growth. Downtown should practically be demolished and reworked into a town worth living... in the mean time there are a few places businesses could be opened, old lumbermill on 4th and utopia, or mentor? Get people wanting to live there again, not move out. Get the cabooses out, expand DG, give local businesses benefits for opening there, etc. There are good roots there, we just need to dig them up and find them again.
is it rented?

It looks like the sign says that there is no space available anymore so something is moving in. Anyone hear anything ???

Not sure why anyone is surprised at this. Those cabooses are becoming an eyesore. But hey. Lets not modernize at all. Lets live in the past. Who needs jobs right? Are we thar used to people just leaving That we've given up trying to do anything to bring people in? That whole area I'd so cramped and cluttered its almost impossible to get a truck in there to deliver anything. I'm all for history and character in a town. But how much character will our town have when all the working people are gone And all the that's left ate welfare bums and dope dealers. Latrobe has the same problem. Wed rather live in the past and watch the town fall apart than see somebody create jobs. And since nobody in town is starting any businesses I guess its up to the big businesses to do it

Only place to go in Derry is Mastroccos but then you have the town cops pulling everyone over that comes into town so I stay out of Derry

Had someone from New Florence come to my house to buy something I was selling.Last thing they asked is how to get back home without going thru Derry...SAD
