Liberty County Sheriff Greg Arthur believes he was defeated in his quest for a third term because he ran as a Democrat when voters Tuesday elected the county's first-ever Republican sheriff.

wow, I guess that told him.. have to say I vist Dayton alot and have only had to call the Sheriff's Department out once ( when we had someone on my boyfreinds land .. it was just myself and his 11 year old daughter home at the time ) but unlike the police in the UK..two of them turned up within 5 mins..and were very kind and took a good look around the land.. so I guess he's not doing that bad a job.. again in the UK sometimes you'll be lucky if you get anyone to come out within two hours..

This sheriff and his deputies were do nothings. This sheriff let Daisetta Police do their work for them while they sat at the coffee shop in Liberty. They seldom sent any Deputies out on calls to Cleveland, which is in Liberty County. No he didn't lose because of straight ticket voting. The people of Liberty County wanted a new Sheriff. I think the new Sheriff, Henry Patterson will make some needed changes in the Sheriff Department.

wow guys I think that you should both be happy you have police that do the job they are meant to..and lets not forget that they put their lifes on the line each and every day. I for one think that your police ( and I'm not from texas) do a great job. and again its those that bitch about them that are the first to ask for their help when they need it..

Just to let you all know, the new Sheriff in town is doing a whole lot better than our old Sheriff evr did. I listen to the police scanner and the Sheriff Deputies are really on top of things now. The Duputies are now making lots of calls in Cleveland Texas. You can already see a big difference that the new Sherriff has made and he has just got started.

Naeveh, Are you allowed to have guns in your home for personal protection in the UK? Just a question I've always wanted to know. Actually our new Sheriff is doing a great job so far. Why are you not allowed to have a police scanner?

no , the law say's we aren't allowed guns, myself spending alot of time in Texas I can see why some people would want them, but their are those that should never be allowed to own a gun of any kind..( the bloody idiots that have them for all the wrong reasons) you know the type, those that think they are hard men just because they have a gun or those that use them to harm others...myself think their is only two reason anyone should need a gun ( apart from the law) if you are hunting or if you need to project your home and family... it is to easy to get a gun over there, all you need to do is go to a pawn shop and show some ID. and you can buy one ( and have to say some that do that shouldn't even own a goldfish) at one point you could also buy them in Walmart. thank god you can't do that anymore..a few years ago I took my then 15 year old son over to Texas with me and while in Walmart he went to look at the guns. and was asked by one of the staff that was working there if he'd like to buy a gun..( and have to say I wasn't happy) but saying that even the police aren't all that carefull with their guns ,, was in the Walmart store in Liberty Texas last year and one of the police officers went to use the bathroom and walked of and left his gun there, thank god one of the store staff found it before a child did. as he left if loaded I belive :?

As a general rule, over here we are not allowed to have guns for any reason (hunting, protection, murder, collecting etc.).

You are only allowed to own them under special circumstances and those who are granted guns are checked up upon on a regular basis.

I personally think that fewer or no guns results in greater safety and peace of mind than having everyone packing a hand cannon, since it is pretty hard to shoot someone if you have no gun in the first place.

From what I've seen and heard Americans in general seem to have a paranoid view that the world is a dangerous place and that they are under constant threat (if you don't have a loaded gun and a reinforced door on your home then you're leaving yourself open to attack), should you really be giving so much firepower to a country of scared people?

The reason I have a gun over here is for protection from everyone else having a gun. If I lived somewhere like the UK that does not allow everyone to have a gun, I would not need one either. We do have some idiots over here with guns.

have to say I love it over in Texas, but I dose scare the hell out of me the amount of guns that are around.. we have just as many if not more idiots over here, so I know what you mean.. myself have been shooting while I was over in Texas,( go to Gun range ) we are getting alot of knife killings over here right now and it won't be long before that is just as many gun killings.. myself think sometimes the world is going to hell in a handbasket.. anyway you have a great weekend & take care of yourself...

Interesting thread........ There are a couple of dudes with the department that drive by my house and wave while passing by....

It may be a false sense of security, but it makes me feel like they may be looking out for our safety and well being.....

i have to say there are some idiots here on this web site im am in one of the local vfds and listen to the scanner and have friends that are deputies
first of all most of the deputies don't even know the new sheriff because he doesn't show his face
second there is always deputies on the north end(Cleveland) but mostly Cleveland police takes care of its own area
third we shut down the roads for yours and our protection because most of the time people do not pay attention to what is going on and try to run us over so find out for sure what you are talking about before you talk about it

Living in Liberty just few years, don't have lots of first hand expierence with law enforcement, city or county.

Department politics are of no interest to me. Living in Liberty offers me security and comfort. I appreciate our law enforcement officers very much.

If the elected officials do not do their jobs, go to the polls...
