I live near the bridge that the man jumped off. It is an ongoing problem at this bridge that people disregard the sign on the bridge advising them not to jump from the bridge and when people call to report that people are jumping off the bridge , we get no police action from the sheriff's department or from wildlife

12 feet is deep enough and he even resurfaced. I wonder what actually killed him.

It's difficult, if not impossible to protect people from themselves. Sorry for the man and his family...

Three people in the last two weeks have drowned. What did these three people all have in common? Well, they *knew* they couldn't swim, but they still got in the water.

Allow me to be insensitive for a minute, but these poeple are just plain freaking stupid!!!

I live just down the road from the bridge that is on ridge road, and I passed by while the coroner's and the ambulance were on the scene. I knew something awful had happened. I often see kids jumping from that bridge, and I know that the water there can't be that deep. We live in Horse Creek Cove and spend alot time on the lake, and I hate to see things like this happen. I always worry when I see kids, or anybody jump from bridges. My thought's and prayer's are with the victim as well as the family.

... didn't know if the guidelines had been followed. What guidelines? For jumping off bridges into shallow water?

I was wondering the same thing. The whole story is confusing. It hasn't been that many years since college, what changed? This isn't a random occurrence. It surprises me that this was likely approved for post by another writer! My English professor would've stroked out if I handed her writing like we see here (and elsewhere) daily

I've never seen guidelines posted for something that's not supposed to be done to start with! According to the video, this man couldn't even swim! The DNR officer in the video mentions life jacket safety and the buddy system....but according to another post, there is a no jumping sign on the bridge!!

As summer winds up, we will see these types of accidents more and more. So far, I didn't hear about this being alcohol related or not but jumping from a bridge into 12 feet of water is not very smart. You don't know what the bottom is like, how strong the current is and if there are any obstructions.

Law enforcement can't be everywhere at once but I wonder if DNR at least fined the folks for jumping from the bridge?

I had a similar experience last year on I-95 at Lake Marion. My wife and I were driving northbound and had just crossed the lake and were approaching the second bridge when we had a kid jump out from the lake, run across the second bridge into traffic then dive off the bridge back into the lake. Now THAT was STUPID. I came within 3 or 4 feet of hitting this KID doing something THIS STUPID ON THE INTERSTATE! I wonder where his parents were? Must not of been a brain cell to split between them!

Unfortuantely, in and around most bodies of water, moving or stagnant. You are on your own! Its best to exercise caution where open water is concerned. As a friend of mine often states, "You can't see what is under the water". Most times there are a number of unseen hazards, to include your "state of mind". Reagrdless, my condolences to his family and friends. And thanks for attempting
the best rescue possible.

First of all I knew this guy personally, and he would never jump into any water. He knew that he could not swim. Maybe his so called best friends need to be questioned over and over again. Just last week his so called friend threatened his life, and this week he is dead. Come on now. I am afraid that this so called accident is indeed intentional and not accidental. This man has been trying to find him another place to live because of the circumstances he is presently living in. He furnished the PLACE that he and his friends were sharing, when he told them that he would be taking his furniture with him when he moves out, arguments arose between the two of them. There is also a female invoved in this, almost a love triangle. I'm not accusing anyone, I'm just saying please put the pressure on the friends that were involved, I promise the truth will arise. This man stayed on a boat for three days in the middle of the Congaree River, when it drifted away from the shore, he never once tried to swim back to shore, even though he had a life jacket. This man was not a genius, but quite few of us are either, but he was smart enough to know that HE COULD NOT SWIM.Investigate and compare stories of the people involved, I guarantee you will find the truth. Put the pressure on them and interview them seperate. He will not R.I.P until justice is served. Did anyone jump in to save him, NO. I think the friend ran towards the officer because they all were caught doing something WRONG. What's the real deal????

All the parties involved really need to come forward and tell the truth. No one deserves to be treated like this? Did someone push him? Could any of the friends swim? Was he dressed in swimming trunks for swimming? Were they dressed in swimming gear? Who is being charged with this murder? This guy was a little special, no experience in swimming, but he jumped in 12 feet of water- YEAH RIGHT-This case cannot be that hard to solve.....

Play the video that accompanies the story. There is a little more detail in it. I wondered the same thing until I watched the video.
