Lexington as a retirement town

We were stricken with Lexington's decadent beauty last year when we drove all over the town en route from a balloon festival in Greenwood, Miss. It was so full of gorgeous old houses and it was easy to see that it had once been a very affluent and wealthy town. I wanted to see it as I had enjoyed the movie The Hazel Brannen Smith Story many years ago where Jane Seymour played the Pulitzer Prize winning newspaper owner there but did not realize until last year'd visit that the film was actually shot somewhere else...hence we did not recognize the town from the movie.
I also read once that one of the old movie stars, I think it was Loretta Young, had a brother who owned a gas station in Lexington.
We are retiring this year and want to move to a small southern town within reasonable distance to an airport as Lexington is. Is it an okay place for a 50-something upper middle classed couple? How is crime?
Take care of your very beautiful town. It would be nice to see the picture postcard square restored. Thank you for any pointers.
