I'd do stories of general human interest, personal anecdotes of Lexington, MO's recent history, or commentary on national and international affairs. I would NOT write about things of peculiar interest to Boulder, CO. Some samples of recent stuff from Boulder Daily Camera follow, just to give you a sense of style (a weekly column would be longer, of course):

If "Yes" prevails in this poll, I'll contact Lexington News.

do an article on this first:

Man accused of forging mother's name on checks while hiding her corpse
The Kansas City Star

A Lexington, Mo., man forged his mother's name on her checks and lived off the proceeds while her body decomposed under a tarp on her bedroom floor, Lafayette County prosecutors alleged Monday.

Max Weller, 46, was charged with one count each of abandonment of a corpse and receiving stolen property, and 16 counts of forgery.

Prosecutors said the scam dated back to as early as February 2001 -- the apparent time of death of Mildred Weller. Her body, prosecutors charge, lay in her Lexington home since then, covered with a green tarp and packed in cat litter to mask the smell.

According to court documents, Lexington police found Mildred Weller's body while trying to check on her well-being. Tall grass and prolific weeds choked her yard, drawing the suspicions of neighbors.

"We were led to believe that she was in rest homes in Basehor (Kan.) and then Kansas City," next-door neighbor James McGrath said. "Turns out that was just a decoy."

While police were seeking Mildred Weller, federal officials were investigating a case of possible Social Security fraud and forged checks by Max Weller, according to court documents.

At her home, investigators found signs posted outside claiming the house was rigged with traps.

The woman's body was found in one bedroom inside the home, and checks from her bank account were discovered in another.

Investigators believe Mildred Weller died of natural causes, but were awaiting the results of an autopsy to make a final determination.

Monday evening, neighbors cast the Wellers as people who kept to themselves, and Max Weller as standoffish.

"I figured there was something going on," said Rona Reade. "He was always in the house, and he wouldn't let anyone come in their yard."

Next-door neighbor McGrath said Max Weller was "a hard gentleman to figure out."

McGrath said the younger Weller served on the City Council in Lexington, and considered a run for mayor within the past few months.

Mildred Weller was a retired schoolteacher, McGrath said. Max Weller was on physical disability because of a back injury. Weller's mother was living in the home when McGrath moved into the neighborhood six years ago.

"I can't believe he thought no one would find out," McGrath said.

Been there, done that. If that's all you got, better start over.

Daddy McGrath knew his boy, Jeff, was a major meth dealer -- yet he had the chutzpah to talk about me? As phony as you, who hides behind a screen name ...

new to the discussion here but WOW, just WOW...imagine a person who did what Max did, calling ANYONE out? Truly unbelievable. Oh, and my name is Frank T "Ash" Smith of Higginsville for your information Max.

Max, in your world, you have found redemption simply because you "served your time"..., whatever gets you through the night. And you truly want us to believe you don't have nightmares? Having studied individuals such as yourself in the past in college I would prefer to differ. Your nights are most certainly not peaceful.

OK, Frank T. Smith or "Ash" if you prefer. Since you're new:

1) Do you know what state charges I pleaded guilty to?

2) Do you know that the federal government (which was defrauded by me for about $10,000 over a year-and-a-half period) declined prosecution?

3) Do you know that I sold my home and all of my personal property to make restitution to the feds, voluntarily?(As Judge Rolf sentenced me to DOC, he could not by law order restitution).

4) Do you know that I have repeatedly discussed personal details in my case with law enforcement officers, mental health professionals, parole officers, the Parole Board itself, and several religious counselors?

5) Do you know anything about clinical depression, schizoaffective disorder in the context of depression, and PTSD?

6) As to that article, it's full of factual errors and gossip from a neighbor trying to settle a score over some trivial matters that neither my mother nor I were very concerned about. And we won the argument in legal proceedings, too.

7) Granted, Ash, you're probably a better and stronger man than I. You might have been able to care for your dying parent in your home, per her heartfelt wishes, without any emotional support from another person, while every penny your parent and you had was gradually spent on her care -- without even money enough at the end of her life to pay property taxes or utilities. Unable to work yourself because of physical disabilities, and after your parent's passing suffering from major depression w/suicidal ideation, I'm sure that Frank T. Smith would have emerged unscathed. Pat yourself on the back!

I, however, wrongfully chose the easy way to hang on by my fingernails -- using the monthly Social Security benefit paid directly into my mother's account to live at a minimal level for a time. Being arrested was a relief, and I confessed everything immediately, giving the authorities some info they otherwise couldn't have discovered, much to the chagrin of my public defender.

The only person I didn't talk to was Maria Antonia of KMBC-TV; not in 2002 after my arrest, and not later in Springfield, MO in 2004 when I had been paroled. Not easy to say no to such a cute woman, twice.

Ash, I don't owe you a thing and never have, but there's my story just the same. Charles Manson I'm not, unless you've been smoking meth with Jeff McGrath and are suffering from paranoid delusions.

BTW, I still don't have a clue who "Rona Reade" is. I can't recall that she ever introduced herself to either my mother or me.

showmo...you are a very mean person to talk to another person like you just did ..... really none of you all can judge max , only god . but let me tell ya , god can make you walk the same shoes as he did , the bible says that . the words you ae saying are evil , and alot of hate and that comes from the devil. really max should care less on what a human thinks , you or no other can take his soul, but if he asked god for forgiveness he is safe , cause god can take his soul. max dont let this people get to you , someday they will have to face god and if they dont ask for forgieness for saying them , they will be confronted with them . how can a human cast stones , we are all sinners .

For the record here, "showmo" is a guy I've deleted permanently from my blog on the Daily Camera online in Boulder, CO. He just wouldn't stop using profane language, so I made him disappear as it's within my power as website administrator to do.

He probably ain't smart enough to realize that I also know his IP and more ...

In any case, folks out here have known stuff like that in re my felony case since 2007. For better or for worse, most of them now accept me.

And no, I was never in Ad Seg in the joint -- I was tutoring the really tough guys as well as the not-so-tough, and never had a problem with any of 'em.

Showmo, you've been watching too many movies and TV shows about fictional prison life.
