----I'm afraid he ran into DEA trouble. The public records and he said he'd had problems before. Considering his kids are house are in Lexington area, nothing else really makes sense. It's a shame. I wish him well; however, I still can't get over how he treated us - his patients - no warning, no referrals, no last refills, no explanation, especially since alot of us had been with him for years. He really left us in the lurch.

I think it is ridiculous that the police/investigators go against doctors who simply do their job. Police are NOT doctors and just because a few addicts somehow managed to lie about their pain in order to feed their habit doesn't mean all people with chronic pain should suffer. That is why pain medicine was made. In fact, I believe opium was put on this Earth for just that purpose, and money hungry scroungers saw money signs in their eyes and decided to make it nearly impossible for normal people to get their hands on. When will people realize that the government is not out for the best interest of the common people?! Why can't we all just live in peace? A Lortab won't cure a toothache let alone debilitating back/joint pain!

Is it spam that he is not practicing? Is it spam that he left his patients without notice? Is it spam that his patients who are dependent on pain medication are running around trying to find another physician to prescribe their meds?

I've seen dr Brooks for over a yr now. He's a great physician & the only one out of the many orthopedics I've seen that knew exactly what was wrong with me the first time I saw him. He is a wonderful caring person! I'm not sure of exact details but he has contacted me to let me know he's "ok". If/when he contacts me with any further info I'll share. Meanwhile it's been over a month & I am stil without a dr...l

FYI - I emailed the Kentucky Medical Board and requested a copy of the "Previous Action" that was on Dr. Brooks' record. The information they sent said that he was fined $400 for not completing his Continuing Education Credits for 2004 and not requesting an extention. Bottom line - he got busy and forgot to take a couple of classes. It had nothing to do with drugs or anything else patient related. At this time there are no current actions against him. His license is still active and unrestricted and there is nothing pending.

The question still remains, where is he? and why didn't he let his patients know he was going to be gone? I've had other docs retire, move, etc., & they all told me ahead of time either in person or by letter. Plus, they offered referrals & if meds were involved they wrote a prescription for at least another month or so in order to find time to find another doc.
Even if he was completely blindsided by Commonwealth Rehab and let go that day, Martha told me that it was her idea to send out the letters to everyone, he could've given us his info in that letter or one with it. At the VERY LEAST his patients need to know if he's going to TRY to continue practicing.
I've seen him for years. He found things other docs had missed. Think he's great doc and I like him personally - But this is completely unprofessional.

He just has a lot going on in his personal life right now so I'm sure that him losing his job has added a ton of extra stress that he really doesn't need at this point. He's a wonderful man though & I know that it's bothering him that he wasn't able to do better by us (his patients) but I think he was just thrown into a situation to where there really wasn't much he could do. I know he does genuinely care about each & every one of us though & once he's back on his feet I'm sure we will hear from him. He didn't take our contact info just for the heck of it! However, my mother in law said she saw on the news that he & 2 other drs were all busted on the same day for "over writing" I never saw this & she's not exactly my biggest fan so who knows if that's true or not. In the meantime, I was told that there is a place in Georgetown called bariatric something or another, there's also a clinic in Richmond & morehead that have been advertising on tv that they're accepting new patients. I took down # for both if anyone wants them. I finally have an appt next week praise the Lord! I know I couldn't deal with the intensity of my pain much longer. I haven't been able to eat or sleep & showering has become very limited bc it just hurts me to dang much. There is relief in the future though so that & GOD are the only things getting me through this horrible time right

Dr Brooks obviously would have contacted you or let you know ahead of time that he was leaving IF HE COULD HAVE.

So it was either a surprise or he was prohibited from contacting his patients at that time.

Don't wait around for him to contact you, FIND ANOTHER DOCTOR. Then IF you ever hear from him, change back.

There are plenty of other doctors that prescribe medication in Lexington. Get out the yellow pages... or google pain management doctors in Lexington.

Lexington Clinic has at least 2 (Tallio/Swint), there's the Pain Treatment Center with SEVERAL docs (Ballard & about 5 others), the one in Hamburg (can't remember the name). The list goes on.

Or try asking your primary care doctor for a recommendation. Or your physical therapist. Sometimes even pharmacists will tell you info on good doctors.

If you have a legitimate, documented injury... you should be able to find another doctor easily.

That said, most of them DO take at LEAST a month or two to schedule an appointment when you are a new patient.

Dr. Brooks may have signed a non-compete clause or any number of things that might cause him not to practice in Lexington anytime soon.

----------Since Commonwealth rehab isn't hiring a new doc, there shouldn't be a non-compete clause. That was one of the reasons, he told me, that he moved out of Lexington - that he had signed a non-compete clause with the Lexington clinic he was with and it stipulated he had to be so many miles away for several years. He also told me that he'd never have that problem again with his contract with Commonwealth Rehab. Besides him telling me, I know there's no non-compete clause from experience. If there's a non-compete clause, the entity - Commonwealth Rehab -- would have to install another doc and ask us if we wanted to stay there OR if we wanted our records to go somewhere else. Commonwealth not only wanted us to get our records, they wanted to get rid of them quick.
As for contacting patients, either his life is to much up in the air and he hasn't had time and/or resources to contact us OR he's been forbidden by the med license board OR they've limited him so he can't write prescriptions.

Narcotic pain meds are very addicting... nobody plans to become a drug addict. Whether they are using pain pills for genuine uncontrolled pain or for recreational use. I never met a drug addict who planned to become an addict, it is all fun and good til the supply runs out - then you wake up and realize "I am addicted to this shit and have to have it just to get through the day"
May God help all those affected by Dr. Brooks, who so wrecklessly prescribed addiction to his patients.
To all his patients view this as a blessing in disguise and get the help you need frim a legitimate source.
Like I wrote when this Topic first started - Dr. Brooks is being investigated once again. Most people who rely on pain pills do love good old Dr. Brooks until the supply gets cut off then they sing a different tune - just like Carolyn Crawford is singing now! Sorry Carolyn and best wishes with getting help for your dependence on pain pills.

It's been several months and I haven't heard anything from Dr. Brooks. He left in a completely unprofessional and dangerous way. My best guess is that he's under investigation for prescribing meds. That being said I disagree with "addiction," that this is a blessing in disguise. It's so much easier and safer for cops to go after doctors than meth dealers, etc. They've got docs so scared it's tough to find one that'll write a perscription for ANY kind of pain med, because why should they take a chance?, they get paid for the visit and exam either way. It's getting ridiculous. Some of us are in genuine physical PAIN. I've had so many surgeries & procedures that I have to take a pre-typed list of them when I see a new doc because I can't keep track. And they haven't fixed the problem and I'm told nothing else can be done.
On the flip side, if you go in and say you're depressed, well, doctors will write out perscriptions for Prozac, Seroquel or whatever else is being advertised on TV.
