You just say merry christmas - I don't believe in Cupid either but I celebrate Valentines Day- Atheists are happy most of the time because they don't believe in a religion that uses fear to make its followers obey- Buddhists, Wiccans and others don't have to use the fear of eternal damnation to get followers----

Actually, gifts are related to the celebration Santa Claus, the obese (oh how american) version of the dutch/european Sinterklaas, who was a bishop from Turkey.

Your questions should be:
- why has christianity labelled the mid-winter fest with its candle-lit trees as christmas?
- why did americans pervert the Sinterklaas celebration of december 5th?
- if you want to celebrate a christian holiday, why make it so commercial with your shopping sprees?

Of the questions posted above I like the "what do you say to an Atheist" the best. You say to an atheist: "I am prepared to change my mind if there is sufficient evidence."

My Liberal "Holiday" Wish List:

-That the goverment mandate that all shopping malls have a Gay Santa Clause for at least a few days a week.

-That all elementary school science books have a picture of a Crying Polar Bear featured on the front cover.

-That the Presidential Limo be replaced with a Prius.

-That all employees of Wal-Mart and Target be forced to say "Merry Non-Conformist Season's Greetings" to people who are Christmas Shopping.

-That the words "Under God" in the Pledge be replaced with "Under Allah" or "Under Monkees"

-That school menus by law have to serve kids a certain amount of tofu and soy beans.

lol. Let's all ignore the evidence in support of the theory that Darwin postulated. Plug your ears when someone talks about the sequencing of the human genome, or bacteria evolving into resistent bacteria. Let the scientists figure out new medications and technology that improve your life, while you do your best to make others feel miserable.

It makes me wonder how much science can embarrass religion before you get a clue.

You seem to need to have imaginary friends, be it God, Allah or Monkeys. Can't your great nation figure things out for itself?

I forgive you for clinging on to Christmas. It really is a harmless, fun and family/friends oriented holiday, and it has earned its place in american culture. But it is silly to use christmas, eating meat and attacking gays as a bastion for christianity.

If you want to defend christianity, try to convince people that faith is more important than critical thinking.

Actually the gift giving tradition of Christmas comes from the pagan celebration. As does mistletoe, holly bushes, fir trees (Christmas trees), Yule logs, etc.
Santa Claus just sort of melded really well with the pagan traditions.

Ahh yes, and now we have it. The "Try to make Christmas something evil by telling us it is a Pagan Holiday"

Even though the majority of people celebrate Christmas or have no problem with people celebrating it we have to some how bring it down.

-Is Labor Day somehow a Pagan Holiday too?
-And what about New Years Day?
-What about Thursdays in general, are they Pagan?
-What about Wednesday January the 11th, is it Pagan too?
-What about every odd Tuesday after the full moon?

Pagan Holiday, sheesh get a life.
