I'm not arguing with you about the size of the church... not because I agree with you, but because I know I will never change your mind and you will never change mind. Thus, there is no point in wasting each others time. My point was simply that your information about the 2005 cancellation of the Christmas day service was incorrect.

I'm not a Christian and have no interest in organized religion. I have seen Southland on TV and have friends who go there. I'm amazed at the work they do for people who need help, medical care etc.. It's changed my thoughts that it's just a big business. Well, it is...but the proceeds go to help people. As for the congregation- I imagine it's hard to fit in with some people but they have numerous programs and surely anyone could find their niche.

I used to go to their singles group many years ago. It was originally called "The Gathering" and Rusty George (good guy) was the head of it. They changed the name to "Won by One" several years later and Monty Wilkinson (also a good guy) was in charge of it. If I remember correctly, they switched it from Monday's to Wednesdays. I enjoyed going, not to pick up chicks, but just to fellowship with other Christian singles. The church leadership of Southland, in their infinite wisdom, decided to allow married couples to join our little singles group. I guess they didn't want singles at Southland to have anything they could call their own. It really left a bad taste in my mouth toward Southland. I left the church shortly after that and haven't been back since.

Love Jon's response: if Southland is too crowded, you are going to hate heaven. Yes, Southland is a big church. Sunday is a time for Jon to preach and the Church to worship. If you want and need the fellowship of a smaller group, attend Sunday school and get together in a "home church" meeting in addition to the Sunday worship. Have a Bible study with your neighbors a couple times a month and get the small one on one fellowship you are needing. A large church can do what small churches cannot: reach the masses with the Gospel. Yup, big churches have problems. It takes a lot of organization and sometimes organization causes the focus to move away from Jesus' message of Love. We are all humans who fall short and that is why we need a Savior. But again, a large church with a heart to reach the poor, the unlovely, the forgotten has more resources than the little country church. I wonder how many people watch the Southland Hour on television who wouldn't hear the Word without that outreach. What about the money Southland spends on missionaries? How about the school supplies given to children in the area and Helping Through Him that provides clothing and furniture and breakfast to those in need in Lexington? There is SO much that Southland does in the name of Christ that a small church cannot. Pray for the leadership of Southland, especially Jon Weece. The attack is relentless because of the potential of the Church to reach souls for Christ. And pray that Southland does not get caught up in the politics of organization and strays from the focus of Christ's message. It's Jesus, folks, and Jon and Southland seem to get it right!

Been there ,the people are total snobs when they really have no right to be and the service was so fake and superficial.I'm from Owensboro in my third year at UK and that was my first church I went too in Lexington.I thought everyone in Lexington would be like the people in that church but luckily they're not.I find Immanuel to be a much better church.

Ithought it was just me at first but then I started talking to people about this scenario. It seems that everyone that grew up in Southland Christian Church and went to LCA are in their own isolated society and shun everyone else out. What I mean is they are mostly nice and pleasant towards people on the outside but never will let you into that inner social ring.Granted everyone has a comfort social ring but once someone is dating someone in that circle you would figure those in the group would finally accept you.I thought I was imagining this until I talked to people around Lexington which fully agreed.I am all for organized religion but this is the ultimate money church click that shuns outsiders.
You need to go dance at the local strip club to be in the click at this church. They go there twice a week and take them all meals and gifts.

I've went to Southland since I was a child, and I don't remember a Christmas service ever being canceled. I'm sorry that you're so bitter.
They cancelled it last year. There was a big write up in the paper about it.

You're incorrect. The program/support group is called Bruised Reed and it's where Southland trys to help dancers get out of the "business". The dancers come to Southland for group meetings, and volunteers from the church bring them finger foods. I think it's a wonderful program. God forbid a church try to help someone better themselves and recognize their self worth.

i can't believe you all are arguing about church. If you believe in god that should be all that matters. Southland is a great church, Jon Weece has done a great job, and im grateful to be a part of that church.

No actually you are wrong. They go to the strip bars and bring the women food twice a week. They also made christmas presents for them and had victoria secret gift cards in them. That is really encouraging the girls to get out of the business...lol. Just what they need....lingerie.

Oh geeze, forgive me for forgetting one tiny tidbit of information in that post. You're right, they DO take food to the strip clubs AFTER THE CLUBS ARE CLOSED. As far as the gift cards are concerned, I have no idea. But I am done defending Southland, I know what going to Southland has done and continues to do for me and my spirituality. For those of you that would like to form your own opinions (and find out the truth) about Bruised Reed, you can go here: http://bruisedreed.southlandchristian.org/

If they are so concerned on saving the dancers souls, then why not put bibles in their gift baskets instead of victoria secret gift cards? Or instead of them going to the strip clubs, why not invite the dancers to church for a dinner? Why not try to get them away from the strip club? This seems to encourage them to go to the club. Their article on this last year even said that some of the dancers come in on their days off, just so they can eat the food that Southland brought. This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. Why not go to homeless shelters and take food? Why, because the homeless people have no money, they want the dancers to like Southland, because those dancers make several thousand dollars a week and they can make a big offering to the church.
