Where is a good place in this town to sign your children up to play baseball?? We've tried shilito park (SLYB) but we are looking for another league. We were going to switch to southeast or southwest but after talking to many players parents I've heard bad things about them as well. I guess what I really want to know is... Does anyone have anything good to say about any of the youth baseball leagues in this town?

As a baseball parent at Southwest, I cannot tell you how pleased I have been overall during my 4 years with SWLPB. I do know, and have spoken with several parents/coaches that have come to Southwest from SL & SE and all have been very pleased with their decisions to come to Southwest. As with any organization, there are things that I feel can be improved upon but nothing as negative as I have been told and found out about other leagues. But, with that being said, I can say that without a doubt, I feel that Southwest strives to maintain the PONY way of baseball "Protect Our Nations Youth." The fall season is a great opportunity to check out SWLPB. Regardless of your decision, good luck in your search for a league and I hope you find a great baseball "home."

If you live in SLYB's district, you're only choices would be Southwest (Pony) or Western (Little League).

SE and SLYB are the ultra competitive elite leagues in Lexington and aren't for everyone. Not a knock on SW, Western LL, or Eastern LL at is what it is. If you know that going in, and your expectations are set accordingly, you'll be fine.

Southwest does not have any league boundries. It doesn't matter where you live.

As a parent of southwest pony players I am not pleased to find out that they allow convicted felons to coach our children. I believe that these coaches should have background checks performed yearly obviously this league thinks that this is acceptable I hate to be the one to break it to them this is not okay with me and have since pulled my children from this league. So if your thinking of having your children play here you may want to background check your childs coach first!!!

First of all, this thread was started in 2010, and someone decided to dig it up to bash a baseball league. Let me preface this statement with the following caveats: 1. My kids do not play at SouthWest, I will not tell you where they play, just to say that my son and daughter are both active in diamond sports here in Fayette Co. 2. I do not have a pristine/clean record, so therefore I do not coach my children because their leagues do require a background check for their coaches.
With that being said, I do not agree with a background check requirement for their coaches, and I'll tell you why. First of all as you may recall, a couple years ago Penn State Football Coach Jerry Sandusky was tried and convicted of a whole slew of inappropriate, and down right despicable charges relating to young players that were in his charge. His behavior was deplorable and his decision to exploit his position and take advantage of these young men hopefully results in his eternal damnation...or for the non-religious readers out there let's hope he's reincarnated as a urinal in the nastiest truck stop in America. But to the poster above, I hope you realize that Mr.. Sandusky would have passed any of the leagues background checks. PASSED... and now COACHING YOUR KID.
This is the problem with the false sense of security that the "big business" of background checks creates. You think that just because someone has passed a background check that means it's safe for you to be a lazy mom or dad and drop your kid off at practice so you can go shop at Wal-Mart, or sit in the car and play on your cell phone.'Do you want me to tell you how to keep your child safe???? Get involved!! Do you know why I don't care if my son or daughter's coach has passed a background check??? BECAUSE I'M THERE...or my wife is there. Your child's coach didn't sign up to be his babysitter. Usually the kids who cause the most grief at practices are those whose parents drop them off and leave. If you're going to hire a babysitter to be at your home, alone with your child, then fine...get a background check (again, many bad people still pass those) if it makes you feel better. But the fact remains that I know all the other parents on my kids team, and I have to tip toe around the issue of why I'm not coaching because I don't wish to embarrass my family for something that happened a long time ago. Something I've been punished for, and something that does NOT have to do with harming another individual or stealing something or most importantly DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH HURTING A CHILD!
My biggest issue is, that my own children wanna know why their dad can't coach them, and to be makes me really sad that mistakes I made many years ago are impacting their lives today. My crime did not result in me doing any jail time, but it will result in me having a record for a couple more years and I have to believe there are others out there like me, that would love to do something positive and help out a youth athletics organization but can't because of Parental-Nazis like you that think that piece of paper is going to protect your child. If I was your kids Coach you can rest assured that I would never allow myself to be the only adult around with my team....this is a very litigious society we live in and there's NO WAY I'd set myself for any hint of trouble by being the sole adult in charge of a bunch of kids. This is a much more practical approach to keeping our kids safe, and in my opinion a far better option than some report that was generated by the internet that frequently contains errors, and is also an invasion of a potential coaches privacy. Sorry for the long post, I'm just sick of parents trying to use technology so they can feel better about being worse parents. Help out in practice. Sit on the bleachers during practice. Talk to your kids. This is the only background check I've ever needed.

Background checks do NOT equal safety for your kid...Just google Jerry Sandusky. He'd have passed every leagues background checks on his way to sodomizing all those young men. Here's a better move for you to make....Put away that cell phone...get out of your car...come help out a practice. Sit in the bleachers. Talk to your kid. Open your eyes. People make mistakes, now they have kids, they want to do good and you want to punish them...SHAME ON YOU. I have 2 kids and neither play at SWest, but guess what, if they did I wouldnt care if their coach had been subjected to a bkground check or even if he had a background because I'M ALWAYS THERE, or my wife is. ONLY BACKGROUND CHECK YOU NEED LAZY! This background check stuff is big business for some companies, it's also an unnecessary expense and invasion of a coaches privacy. WAKE UP AMERICA! GET OUT OF MY BUSINESS! AND FOR GOD'S SAKE STOP TREATING YOUR BSEBALL COACH LIKE A FREAKING BABYSITTER. Stop dropping your kids and leaving, stay and watch...your kid will be the better for it and maybe he'll be better behaved and stop causing grief for his coach. Who, by the way is VOLUNTEERING HIS TIME.
