3-4 fire trucks showing up at every car wreck? This city has plenty of firemen to man the fire trucks. They are just throwing out scare tactics because now they they won't be getting their 30 -40 k in overtime every year by scamming the tax payers. It would be interesting if the herald leader would ever investigate just how much those guys are really making.
how many units show up and how many people that are on a unit is decided by the administration (mayor/council). not the FD. they are just following the rules as applied by the government. that includes the brownouts.

Lets take all the public safety budget and invest it in an interior design school for underprivileged youth. They can decorate the ice rink.

<quoted text>I guess you missed the part where this poster said he was being sarcastic. Is English your primary language?

Let's see is there anything at all the unions stand to gain in all of this? Think about that for a minute and this will become a clearer issue.
Well, aren't you just the smartest thing since Edison! Rather than counter my SUPPORT of the previous posters comments with your nonsensical insinuations, why not say put OWN comments out there instead of combing over others?

I wonder if the people on here posting ridiculous crap realize they are making Mayor Gray's already logical budget decisions seem more valid? Way to crazy up the place.

Mayor Grey has done a good job spreading the budget around so all programs are getting close to their fair share. And yes that includes public safety. Granted everybody does not get everything they want, but look at other cities and be thankful of how we have fared.

The skating rink that you are snotting about is funded by a seperate entity, Downtown Development I believe, connected to Rupp Arena and the Civic Center. The LFUCG has very little money, if any, in the skating rink.

It is very evident to me that you are totally lacking in the knowledge of how other cities and states are treating their public safety employees.

While our community maintains full employment, other cities continue to cut the police and fire departments on a daily basis. I strongly suggest you might like to take a road trip to just about anywhere and see just how lucky you are.

Those brownouts you are snotting about today are nothing compared to what is happening in other communities.

They thought it was funny also. Unfortunately, they are going to pay for that one. They should have held the union in check. Public opinion was damaged when they did that. Now because the public thinks of them as being petty and childish if City Hall decides to make cuts or deny them something they ask for the public won't support them. Strategically it was a very poor move.

The way they march around city hall everytime they don't get they want is terribly childish. This is the highest paid fire dept in the state and all they want is more! I wonder what will
It really take to get them to stop crying about how they need more money, because that is what this is all about. Brownouts = less overtime, which means they can't sit around the fire house and make their overtime schedules out a year in advance.

Obviously a comment made by someone that has no understanding of the current political reality in nearly every city, county, and state in this Union. We LIKE firefighters, we DETEST government. It's that simple. Tear down more trees!

Station 3 hasn't been used for several months. They had to move the rescue over to station 12 since it barely fit at station 3.

I agree with the point about how good they have it in Lexington. Some cities that have many fires have had to close stations and lay-off firefighters, permanently. They should be happy they only have brown-outs to deal with and not unemployment! Didn't I see something about the department getting some brand new fire engines recently?

There were lots of fire trucks parked at the training center today at lunchtime. I wonder who covers those stations when the trucks are that far away? If a neighboring station can cover while they are training, then why can't a neighboring station cover while they are closed for a day?

Those crews at the trng ctr can be called out and put in service quickly if the city gets busy.
If a station is closed due to a brown out, there is no one to call, is there?

They wee probably pyramiding their comp time into overtime and scamming the city. Wait they get overtime everyone time they train. The truth is they were greedy for the last few years with their overtime racket and now they are mad because they aren't making the big bucks.

Any fireman who is bent out of shape over a station brownout needs to call their counterpart in Newark, New Jersey to see how they handled their problem.

First off people, do some research on things before you just go spouting off about things you have no knowledge of when it comes to how the FD operates. The biggest thing to keep in mind with all of this is, we (FD) are just like an insurance policy...no one likes to pay for it, but they sure as hell are glad if/when they ever need it. Multiple firetrucks are sent to calls depending on the type of call. It is better to have more equipment/manpower on scene or on the way to a scene, than it is to not have enough and wait additional time for it to arrive. Overtime really isn't playing into the problems we are having now. It is called manpower...safety is in numbers... that is why we are having to send extra trucks to scenes sometimes, just because we don't have enough people on scene to SAFELY mitigate. I encourage all the blow-hards out there who want to continually bash the FD for everything they do, to sign up for the next Citizens Fire Academy. Get a little taste of what the FD is all about, how and why we operate the way we do. I'm sure it will open your eyes to a whole new world that you never had a clue about. Same goes for a Citizens Police Academy. Walk a mile in our boots, then lets discuss your feelings on these matters. Learn a little about our job and you might just realize why we ask for the things we do, the benefits, pay, health coverages and pensions. If you don't feel like signing up for a class, ask one of your local firefighters, if/when you stop in a firestation anytime we are in quarters. Most of you are scared or too chicken to come ask us questions, you'd rather hide behind the computer and rant and rave about things you really do not know about. Stop by Station #20 (Harodsburg Rd. and Arrowhead Dr....the one with all the Christmas lights...that we paid for out of our own pockets/donations for the light show) and we'll show you around and educate you all at the same time. Have a great day and MERRY CHRISTMAS to you all!!!!

I don't' know an inordinate amount about the FF here in town, but I can tell you for a fact that they are in much better shape than fire departments in many parts of the country. Nobody here is not thankful for the service they provide, but I think there is a sense of entitlement that has gotten out of hand.
