UK announced last week 1400 layoffs. I heard dr. Karpf wanted to complete the new hospital any way possible. I don't know if the staff on some areas can take any more loss of workers. Everyone is scared to death that they will be losing their job. Time in means nothing. Any one know anything about this?

I posted on another thread about the irony of a University which has a mandate to teach and research being in deep financial difficulty while the basketball coach takes home 5 million dollars and gets a bonus of $300,000.00 for winning a national championship...a task that he was hired to do. People are getting laid off, and the staff will get no annual raise. According to the press UK has called people in, fired them, and gave them ten minutes to clear the building. Contrast that with the treatment of Calipair...this man had been paid a fortune and been given enormous power and many of the citizens are highly in favor of his treatment.

What a dipshit. This sounds like an Obama-loving liberal who thinks anyone who's successful should also be responsible for those aren't as fortunate.

I just thought that some of you guys should know that not only did UK lay people off, but they also have a mandatory call off system in which their employees are forced to use their vacation time. Some staff are on a call in list where they sit around and wait to get work. It is sad, but true thinking one day you might go into a job that you've held for years, not knowing if you will be laid off that day.

Have you noticed how some of these nuts seem not to understand the irony of how UK treats it's employees? I suppose that some of the die hard UK basketball fans think that the only thing that UK is about is basketball. Millions of dollars plus total power for one man and the situation that you describe for the rest of the staff...a staff that provides health care, education, and research...while he coaches 10 or 12 kids. The very lock step reverence that some of these fanatics exhibit is troubling. They simply don't understand two important concepts...there is more to UK than basketball and the "emperor has no clothes" concept can be dangerous and that one can be a UK basketball fan and not bow before the coach and question nothing.

Because this the University of KENTUCKY. Last time I looked at a map my town is in Kentucky. Larry, you are quite short sighted. You are so into Calipari that you can't see either the forest or the trees. This is a University whose mandate is to teach, research and with the hospital...heal. Basketball is great, I enjoy it, but it is not the most important function of this University. It is ironic that when the University is hurting, Calipari gains power and enormous wealth. It is also ironic that Calipari's one and done system makes a mockery of the educational purpose of the University. Why not be honest and say that the UK basketball program is a professional organization which is separate from the University. If you can say that I would agree with your fanatic support of Calipari, but to do that you would have to also agree that the basketball program would take no tax money. Remember, that would include building and redoing Rupp, no tax breaks for those who give these donations, no tax supported upkeep for sports dorms, etc.

Please tell me how a program that supports all the other money losing athletic departments at UK (that are mandated by the NCAA)and is entirely self supporting (doesnt take a dime from the university) is responsible for UK cutting jobs. This should be easy for a giant brain like yours.

Without a successful basketball program, title IX would drain millions from the universtity coffers. Fan has the IQ of a rock you can tell him 100 times that the athletic program is 100% self supporting, but he has no idea what a 100% is. Rupp is owned by the city of Lexington and UK has ZERO ownership. UK pays Rupp to play there.

Come now Mark. Who has said that basketball is causing UK to cut jobs? It is the contrast between the feast of Calipari and economic problems of the remainder of the University that I find ironic. A giant brain I do not have, but I do have enough intelligence to know that the function of UK is more than providing entertainment to fellow UK fans, many of whom have never darkened the doors of an educational facility beyond middle or high school.

Put the blame where it belongs. The General Assembly has but education to balance the budget for years. The cuts have piled up to the point that the state colleges have to shrink. They were already cutting classes and programs. Now they have to raise tuition and fire staff. And think about it. If not for millionaire donors, the athletic programs would have been cut too. UK would have never got Calipari if not for private money.

I don't know about basketball or any of the sports being THE issue. But I have heard that the hospital gives a percentage of its revenue to the university. The hospital ha been in the hole for several years. Only two floors of the new towers are completed for patients and nooner to finish. Yes only two floors. If laying off older employees will pay to finish the Karpf towers then he is going to do it. The things bought to "decorate" the building are overpriced and uninteresting and some quite sexual. Looks more like an airport concourse. It is terrible that families can barely afford the food. The hospital has gone to the dogs. Greedy dogs.

the problem at UK is rather simple all these fine buildings they have drained money into and never put equipment or staff in to make money equals useless budget draining space!

I agree with UK fan,if all of these colleges would quit paying so much money to the coaching staff they wouldn't have to keep raising the tuitions on the students and I think if someone gets a full scholarship to attend and they don't finish school before they go off to the NFL,NBA or the NBL then they should have to pay the entire amount of money back and after they go off to make millions they all should do as Mashburn did,he gave over a million dollars back to University for scholarship money. They ought to donate every year to what ever college they attended because if it hadn't been for the colleges they wouldn't be playing professional sports. If colleges keep raising tuition prices, not to long from now they will be closing their doors because no one is going to be able to afford to go ,so what are they going to do then

It's because they over spend. Uk has an 11 million dollar heating plant that barely even runs. In fact, it's had problems since it first opened and has never operated correctly.
They were set to sell 3 big buildings to a company and after they were renovated. UK would lease one of them back. Really, Uk administration is terrible and while the lower paid staff get shit on. They continue their raises and doing a terrible job.
Good old boy system at it's finest.
