They also killed the family dog and chopped it up in the toilet. So many rumors go around about this story..... but if you drive out Russell Cave Rd. with your windows down on any given night, it is always colder as you pass the house.

I did a paper on this story also back in the day and yes it was on Russell Cave Rd. The names of these schmucks I cant remember but all the correct info I found was at the Central Library in Lexington. I'm thinking it happened in 77 if I remember correct. They escaped from the old courthouse and got caught in Falmouth Ky at a small motel. The mother went in a mental institution for a little while (according to Duff family statement) this family was part of the most elite here in Lexington (wealthy) the house has 16 rooms in it, by looking at it from the road I would have never guessed that. One of the guys was foreign like swedish or something... He had a very European name.. Gosh I wish I could remember more.. The lady that worked the hotel that night said they were soaked in blood and had walked in the hotel as if they had done nothing... Craziness..

The family was killed October 1, 1973, the father was 47 years old it was the day before his birthday ( October 2, 1973). The daughter was 17 date of birth ( 6-12-1956) and the son was 14 date of birth (March 14, 1959). They are buried in a small cemetary in Winchester Ky. That is all I know. Does anyone know if a book or anything has ever been written?

Here are a few articles I found online... Incredibly shocking story. I was unable to find the local newspaper coverage of the event. If someone can find it and link to it I think it would be interesting to read. I'd also like to read the follow-up coverage of what happened to the men who did this.

I thought that was about early 70's. I think one guy's name was Collins. Didn't they escape from the local courthouse holding cell? Then go out there and hold the children hostage until the parents got home?

I think this was also, the one where my eigth grade art teacher was abducted afterwards and kill too. Ms. Florence. It was on the national news the next day. There are archival info at Vanderbilt University on it, I believe.

Sadly, I know more than I wish I did. The girl, Francine Barnes, was in my class at Sayre School. Oddly, the two guys escaped from a holding jail downtown near the school and abducted a woman from Sayre as she was picking up her child. As I understood, the car simply ran out of gas in front of the Barnes home on Russell Cave. It was October 1973. The father was an Episcopal Priest and his wife was in Louisville attending an ECW (Episcopal Church Women) convention. I was in Lexington last week and for some reason this came up in a conversation with my brother who was a paramedic at the time. Although he did not respond, he knows who did. The only detail he mentioned was that the father's feet were shot off and he was forced to watch his daughter's abuse. The son's head was shot off in the toilet. One of the killers supposedly killed himself by burning himself up in his cell. The other was murdered by decapitation.

I remember hearing those same details but never knew if they were true or simply added for effect. Thank you for your response and I hope thus topic didn't bring up too many long ago stored memories.

If everyone was dead at this house, How did they know what the father was forced to watch? How was the girl killed?

The dog (a german shepard ) was found behind the refridg and was so in shock had to be put down.
One of the killers was a black man and his white friend, who lived in Joyland park subdivision.
The white guys dad was a butcher at krogers that use to be located in the Eastland shopping center.( realy good folks).
