Anderson is a criminal plain and simple! He deserted during a time of war! There was a time that at best a deserter would do a tour behind bars and at worse put to death. The press needs to treat him like the scumbag coward he is. I recently retired from the military after 25 years service. I did four combat tours and never even considered AWOL. Plain and simple, this Combat Vet considers Anderson a coward and not the hero the press is making him out to be. In closing, consider this, there are guys with artificial limbs returning to duty in IRAQ. Now these guys are the real heros, but our press considers that back page news...

Good for him, Anderson is a hero for standing up for what he belives in, and having the morals to say this war is wrong.

Anderson is no hero. He was plenty free to voice his displeasure with the war while in the military. Whether the war is wrong or not is not the issue. He swore an oath to obey the orders of those appointed over him and when he refused to go and then deserted, he broke the law. He was not being ordered to do anything illegal while in Iraq so he has no defense to his actions. Anderson is a coward, plain and simple, and I only hope I have the pleasure of encountering him in or out of the line of duty.
I will definitely be exercising my right to free speech then!

No, he was NOT free to criticize the war while he was in the mililtary. That is against the UCMJ. Military people do NOT have the same rights as civilians. You must be just a "law pup" if you don't know that.

Right and wrong is ALWAYS an issue.

He didn't desert his buddies while under fire. He simply refused to go back again. Sort of like Bush, except he never even went the first time.

He is a hero of the first order.

Harsh. I agree it's nothing to brag about in this context, but calling them dumb while thier over there fighting is wrong only undermining your own point.

Obviously you've not served in the armed forces (small wonder). You are perfectly free to criticize anything as long as you are not insubordinate while doing so or ridicule superior officer or civilans. Try picking up a copy of Stars and Stripes. You'll find plenty of military people spouting off about things they don't like about the military and/or the war.

Oh so you're a JAG Lawyer? No? Then try not to quote the UCMJ if you don't know anything about it! As an enlisted man he is free to criticize the war. And no I'm not a JAG Lawyer, but at least I served for almost 25 years, this said I at least have experience with the UCMJ on my side...

It must be YOU who never served or you'd know the simple fact that it is illegal for members to criticize superiors.

With every post you sound more like a raving lunatic.

No, but I'm ex-Air Force. You're clueless. It is illegal for members to criticize the government or their superious, which includes the president.

Get a clue.

I really don't care if you believe me or not when I state I served for 25 years. Just pay attention to the news and you'll hear Soldiers critize the war. Guess you never heard the term "a bitching soldier is a happy soldier".. I guess you can't recall the Tennessee Guardsman who critized the military, while he was in Kuwait, for the lack of uparmored Humvees. I'm sorry if while you were in the air force your NCO's did not allow you to tactfully express your opinion. Reading through your posts and judging by your screen name, I'd have to say you're the one doing the raving here

For those of you who think military members are nothing but mindless robots, not allowed to express their opinions go to www.estripes.com and read some of the letters to the editor. Granted you'll have to wade though some silly letters, but you'll find some tactfully critical letters there also...

True.
You should run away BEFORE you get conscripted.

At least this is not like in the time of the pirates when going out to have a few beers would earn you the privilege of waking up the next day with:

"Congratulations!! You're in the Navy!"
