cramming in the inmates

There are 56 comments on the Kentucky.com story from Jan 13, 2008, titled cramming in the inmates. In it, Kentucky.com reports that:

“Of course, every other jail is overcrowded, so it's not like there's a lot of places to send them.”

STANFORD Lincoln County's jail, like many in Kentucky, is packed beyond capacity. It has room for 72 prisoners. On a recent weekday, it held 101, about two dozen of them state inmates for whom there is no space in prisons.

Jailer David Gooch appreciates the revenue that state inmates bring $30.94 a day per body and counts them on his population chart under the heading 'In the $.' But life is a claustrophobic nightmare for inmates. Many sleep on concrete floors. They eat and shower in overcrowded cells, the air thick with body odor and cigarette smoke. There is no escape from the television's drone or from the nearest roommate. They may see two hours of daylight a week from a rooftop basketball court if the weather permits. Read more

Another pig concentration camp for locking down countless numbers for purposes of profit and social control. No other advanced nation locks down its own people in anything like America's two million strong prison-industrial complex. Not even the Chinese do. If we have entered a fascist era complete with concentration camps in every little peckerheaded county seat town, let's be honest enough to say so, and brave enough to organize against it. Free the people!

China, Iran, and the US are proportionally the three greatest judicial killers or their own people. Though the Chinese execute more of their own than the US, they have three times as many people, and they don't execute enough of their own to make the sort of statistical leap your suggest. Anyway, there's very little any of us can do about the gulags of China--the real question is what is to be done about the gulags which torture and abuse people millions here in the so-called Land of the Free? Either Americans are the scum of the Earth and deserve to be locked up in such numbers to protect the rest of us from their uncontrollable depavities, and I'd like to give Americans more credit than that, or the same old corporate suspects are getting very rich from a system which kidnaps, abuses, and warehouses millions of its own people.

To ease the problem of over crowding prisoners, we could as "we the people" begin writing letters to our represenatives, governors, congressmen, senators, etc. we could re-look at our reinstuting the death penality on the national level for, murderer's, rapist, child molestors...ship out all illegal aliens currently being held in our facililities, change our juvenile facilities to military school type institutions, seriously educate our children beginning in preschool the damning effects of drugs (in terms of their understanding) alcohol abuse, crime etc. teach them right from wrong, in conjuction with responsibility.

For the commission of a misdemeanor place them on a community service detail for a term equavilent to jail sentence that would otherwise be imposed.

For those locked up for neglect of, abuse to, or non payment of child support to their children place them in counseling, that teaches responsibility opposed to counseling teaching them to blame someone or something for their actions. Make them work at least 40 hours a week in a service to others program.

etc. etc. etc. Our justice system is the greatest in the world, yet our correctional end is need of repair for our own protection as productive citizens.

"Just stay out of trouble" is a wonderful thought and solution to the problem....however it is not realistic, the "advances" our society has made within the concept of live and let live, excusing actions without responsibility under the "it isn't my fault" the more violent crime increases the number of criminals as well as an increase in the violence during the commission thereof.

I am sorry to read about the undesirable conditions, BUT....there are many honest living people in American that live in much worse conditions that the convicts that molest, rape, murder and rob their fellow Americans.
Their are children whose lives are completly turned upside down when there father is murderded in a drive thru because these criminals need their next fix. These children have lost their income and are now on the streets while the criminal is sleeping in a comfortable bed and has three meals a day.

I'm not for the overcrowding, I just think they shouldn't have a "better" life on the inside when there are plenty of honest hardworking citzens that obey the law and had it alot worse then they do.

It becomes a never ending cycle!

Bigger jail= mr.... going into court for 2 speeding tickets, now judge knows he has room and mr.... gets jail time!

The problem needs work from the inside, starting at a law level! You could build a jail the size of Lexington and in a week it would be full!

Sad but true!

When the goverment took control of children out of the hands of parents , and took corparal punishment out of schools we did a great injustice to this country and the people that live here . When i was growing up i taken to church every Sunday . Mom and Dad always told us kids if we got a spanking at school , we would get another one when we got home . and we knew we would . We have taken God out of our schools and disphine out of homes and wonder why are jails are full .!!!Sorry about the mispelled words ---no spell check LOL

End the War Against The People. That would eliminate 50% of the prison population. Too, it would free up billions that could be used for education and treatment.

The demise of rearing children began with the "drug & sexual revolution" in the 60's....our familial status in the inner cities today have only 1 in 5 households with the father in place. More than 80% of those in the prison system grew up in fatherless homes. Children who grow up with both parents presents do better in school, social situations, make more positive decisions, and are less likely to commit crime, run away or abuse drugs and alcohol. The government didn't take control of our children, we as "a people" gave it up willingly without forthought of our actions/inactions.

Girl, you pretty much head the nail on the head. Parents need to step up to the plate and start parenting their children, instead of wanting to be their kids "friend." I am sick and tired of kids running wild.
As far as this crap about the jails being overcrowded, waa-waa, give me a break. When my kids were teenagers and got grounded, that meant-NO tv, computer, radio, phones, friends over, nothing. They had no life, hence serving time as my oldest told one of his friends. Hey, the majority of the time it worked. Immates have it to easy as it is now.

I agree w/you 100% on this. I volunteer in school and I can pretty much tell you from the beginning if a child comes from a "single-parent" household, or if the parents are even involved in the child's life.
Don't get me wrong just like all parents my children how had their ups and downs. When my oldest son was in high school, he started running w/the "wrong" crowd, as far as we were concerned. His grades started dropping, he started getting in trouble, not acting the way he should have. We grounded him, took away his car, etc., when all else failed, I told his dad, "do something!" In our household, my husband works roughly 12-14 hours a day, and I mainly do the biggest majority of the displinary actions. My husband said, "Ok, but when I do, I don't want to hear one word out of you." (Don't really want to know what my opinion to that was!)
We sat down one afternoon with him, and his dad told him, if you want to act like a delinquent, at the rate you are heading the only job you are going to get is one digging ditches, so that is how your mother and I are going to treat you, like one. He made him dig a hole, fill in it, dig it back out and refill it, this went on for about a week, after that we didn't have anymore trouble out of him, for that matter any of the other kids. Talk about reverse-psychology, he now has an MBA and is a VP at the age of 31. Not bad.
I guess the morale of the story is, like you said, if parents will be parents then the jails wouldn't be overcrowded.

Beating children is wrong and never did help. You're a damn fool.

Also, you don't know how to write or spell. Maybe because you were beaten too much as a child.

Beating children CAUSES them to become criminals. It does nothing to PREVENT it.

People who beat children should be hung.

This whole thread illustrates the brutalization of culture which afflicts everydat life in America to a shocking degree. Men beat women. Men and women beat children. Children beat each other. Eventually all this free-floating rage gets harvested by the military and used to kill and torture those who oppose American empire overseas. There are plenty of examples of savage violence and abuse in nearly every nation, but never has a nation taken such ecstatic pleasure in volemce and death, whether we are talkig about Rambo movies or WWE show-biz wresting or the acts of torture, genocide, and occupation committed against Iraqi civilians. Look at your TV schedule and notice of how many shows make entertainment out of murder. I agree with you that hitting children is bad, though I distinguish between the act of a parent in correcting a potentially dangerous or destructive act, and those sick parents who take out their life's rage on their helpless kids. There is nothing lower than an adult who abuses a child, and nothing unusual about a kid who carries the rage of abuse throughout his or her life.

As for the Stanford jail, I don't doubt that it is a concentration camp run for the profits of a few. Most of these county jails, state lock-ups, for profit-private prisons, not to mention the federales' portals of hell all brought about by the American [in]justice system, another weapon of the endless class war by the rich against the poor. Do not go willingly into their dark night. Do whatever it takes to stay free.
