There seems to be a lot of uproar coming from the parents and some of their friends over the young man removed from the Mifflin County Husky football team because he spent his summer at basic training and didn't attend practice. Now this may sound mean but was this young man a starter last year? What are his stats? Was he just an average player that thought he would be allowed to come back and be in the starting lineup because he was at basic training? Would be interested in hearing all of your opinions?

Haven't heard anything about it. Was he allowed to join the team and just not start? Or was he not allowed to join the team at all?

I won't offer any opinion on this because I don't know the facts.

If I did, I wouldn't be talking about a high school kid on an internet board.

I will say this. I've heard people complain "my kid should start because he is a senior". BS. You should EARN a starting spot. That is the way it is in the pro's. That is the way it is in college. That is the way it needs to be if you are going to be successful.

I'm not implying anything negative about the boy. This boy decided to go do the early entrance basic training this past summer. The football coach was aware of this and told him he wouldn't be penalized for not being available to practice.
He was allowed to join the team, he wasn't used very often and the parents felt that he was being penalized for not being there for practice. Now the parents are saying that the boy was asked to leave the team due to standing up to the coach about not seeing any playing time.
As far as a high school student and the internet, his parents and their friends are writing letters to the newspapers and posting this information all over the news stations websites and on social networks.
My question is this? Was the young man standing on the sidelines due to a lack of ability or was he standing on the sidelines for being at basic training and not at football practice?
Is this just another case where the parents feel the boy is a better football player than he really is? No doubt in my mind that the boy would be in amazing physical condition after spending the summer at boot camp, and congrats to him for such an honorable thing and stepping up to defend his country.

Perfect example as to why some coaches are no longer coaching. The parents are the problem 99% of the time. Let the coaches do their job and keep your nose out of it!

Agreed! My kids have played sports and I've never once approached the coach about how he/she was coaching the team and the couple of times I coached I told any parent who approached me that if they wanted to do it their way they were more than welcome to coach the team next year.

Bottom line is like Milroy said everybody needs to earn a spot on the team. Unless this kid was incredibly gifted at football I can't fathom how he would have been a good fit to start after missing the summer practices compared to the other kids who had been there, learned the playbook the team was using, practiced those exact plays over and over, etc.

Exactly!

On a possibly related note I heard on the radio today from Berman that Coach Hayes resigned as head football coach. No details were provided why he resigned. It may (or may not) have been related to this incident. It's really nobody's business.

All I will say is that I know Coach Hayes, and he is a prince among men. I wish him the best.

Oh please say it isn't so! I have heard of this family and they are never in the wrong. Father pulls gun on man driving past their home to fast, mother crys foul when she doesn't make the cut for a local singing competition. Why can't people just accept that they are just among the mediocre in society and stop causing trouble? Steve Hayes is a great guy, it's going to be terrible if he leaves over such bull crap. From what I have heard the boy was a second string player at best. While I take nothing from the boy for enlisting, kudos to him. But these people just need to stop causing trouble all the time and accept themselves for where they belong in life, right that among the masses of mediocrity. Now I see they are picking on the homecoming contestants. The saddest part of all if that these are adults (parents) crying because they think that is fixed as well. Please people, deal with what you are dealt in life.

Wow,

He resigned but it had nothing to do with anything your are talking about. I love how people jump to conclusions and start the rumors in this county like this. You will read about why he resigned and then wish you would not have posted that.

Excuse me? Reread it TRUTH! This "stink" with the football player has been going on for at least week. As he resigned for other reasons, I hope those parents are happy for making his last days of having the ability to coach nothing but some stupid controversy.

Oh or maybe it was because the Chief Logan Lions weren't allowed to sell french fries.

Go to Facebook Fox News and see the things that are being posted about COACH HAYES! By these parents.

I'd carry a gun too if I was being HARASSED by someone with a criminal record for pulling a loaded weapon on someone 2 years ago.
