And why is there such a poverty mentality in this area? There needs to be a serious mind change in this community

There needs to be a serious mind change in this community Did you ever think it is because of the kind of people they attract here, since most of the employment here is providing handouts for the lazy bums. The welfare system here.

There needs to be a serious mind change in this community I would think it's because of the lack of jobs in Mifflin Co. and the number of families living below the poverty level. I would be interested in seeing what that percentage is and where that number comes from.

The unemployment system is turning into another welfare program. As long as you keep a check rolling in, nobody is going to even attempt to get a job, only under the table, they are producing lazy bums.

Not sure I totally agree with you. There are a number of people who are like you describe, willing to wait for a handout and suckle at the public teat. I don't believe that they are the majority. A year ago I was one of those unemployed. Lasted far longer than I would have liked. I searched the various job boards, talked to family and friends, and sent out resumes and applications by the dozens. Responses were few, interviews were scarce and offers were non-existent. Being a 50 something applicant, age may have played a part. But, so did the vast numbers of applicants for a limited number of openings. It was, and is, a "buyers market." Employers can afford to be much more critical in their hiring. Now, as the person doing the interviewing and hiring, I see and do the same thing. For the limited openings I have, I get dozens of applications. Most want full time but say they will take whatever I can offer.

When I said poverty mentality I wasn't meaning the welfare system, rather that I see alot of folks down and out emotionally at the bottom not able seemingly to think outside the box of just the same old same old nothings ever gonna change way of thinking. That is where I see that alot of ppl need encouragement to go beyond and step out and reach out to others, instead of only being focused inwardly. Yea we all have bad days.. But yrs of it?
