I hear the fire chief in Lewiston is causing quite a stir. Seems he's letting his personal feelings about a local family show in a really bad way....by not letting their son be a "volunteer". Where I come from that is really bad politics.
Seems to me, if he wants to keep his job he should probably learn to play fair.

Why don't you people actually talk with the chief instead of getting on here and throwing around crap like a bunch of monkey's? Oh wait, that would make sense and we can't have that can we?

Mitchell, you don't know shit! So why don't you just stay down in Ohio and play with your little trucks!

Well Mitchell, you've only heard one part of the story. I suggest you find out the whole story before making a post.

We have 3 cadets on the department at this time. How many more should we have? Why not just fill the department with cadets. How many firefighters should we have watching over them when they show up on scene? The department that I came from would have 3 firefighters to oversee 3 cadets. That takes away from the scene or the cadets stand around doing nothing. ATLFD is a volunteer department with EMS being the only full time staffed personnel on.

You listened to someone not envolved with the department, probably a parent, and then decided to post something somewhat negative without knowing all the facts. Where I come from that is really bad politics.

Well Scott--I heard that the chief doesn't want too many firefighters on the department. Just when are there too many firefighters at a fire scene? With a volunteer department you simply cannot have too many firefighters. Everyone works differant jobs and shifts. You should know that when there is a big fire and only four or five guys show up it's a whole lot of work, and chances of saving any building, let alone any lives, is pretty remote.
The person I listened to is ON the township board.

By the way, look up "envolved" in the dictionary--I think you'll find it under involved. That's just bad spelling.

Yes they do want and need people, but the last time I checked they need FIREFIGHTERS! Not 16 year old kids to baby sit. Besides in the state of Michigan you need to be 18 to become a firefighter, NOT 16... That and the fire department have 3 cadets already which is their limit of cadets they want on the fire department and there is a reason for that. It’s already a lot to handle and keep watch over these 16yr olds when dealing with an emergency especially 3 of them. It’s nice to have a few cadets around but there comes a point when there is to many and enough. Like I said before they really need folks that are 18 and old because them individuals can go to fire school and become firefighters. That and people that are over the age of 18, for the most part are much more mature then a 16 yr old……. Wouldn’t you agree? That and the person in question did not even live in the township and to become a cadet you have to live within Albert Township. I use to be very involved with the fire department until I moved away. And I know what it takes first hand to supervise these young individuals and people do not understand what it takes to fight a fire and have to look over these kids. You got to make sure they stay out of harm’s way and fight fires to. It’s not like you can just leave them alone and let them wonder around when you’re dealing with a fire, that’s a lot of liability right there. And as far as you listing the township board member where you heard this from, I probably know who you’re talking about and they more than likely do not have their facts straight like any politician. So in steed of getting your information from a politician that more than likely doesn’t know what they’re talking about like normal perhaps you should ask someone that knows what’s going on with the situation and perhaps there may be other reasons why they did not want that individual on the fire department too who knows…. So next time, get your facts right and move on with your life Mitchell--Ohio FD… Ohio FD? Yeah ok…

You obviously have nothing better to do then to cause drama and talk bad about a very good fire department and a good fire chief that has done a lot for that department and is serving the community better than ever. So perhaps you should find something else to complain about that you have no idea what you’re complaining about… And grow up and move on with your life…

The point I was making was, how many firemen should we have looking out for the cadets on the scene of a fire? They have no clue what they are doing, so how many firemen should we assign to hold their hands?

Maybe down in your neck of the woods the cadets can just run around freely and do as they please. But up here, we make sure that our cadets are safe and not put into harms way.

And if someone from the township board is going around talking about our fire chief and complaining then shame on them! And sorry that I'm not an english major like you!

Sorry for the sarcasm Scott. I guess I was just a little upset hearing what I heard from a township official...I agree that they should not be badmouthing their fire chief. When we train cadets, they are not allowed to run freely, they are usually doing the grunt work on scene and saving the firefighters a lot a energy. If there is a lot of chaos on scene, which there can be at first, they help run lines and keep an eye on their guy to make sure they are safe. If cadets are utilized properly they can be a huge help on scene. They need to know their place, but I still think that it is not a good idea to turn down any kid that wants to serve in his community.

I do agree with you there. The more people the better turnout you'll have for a fire. I only work the EMS side of it and I always try to help out on scene when I can. But, with this being a volunteer department, we are lucky to have 5 or 6 guys to show up.

John is always on the lookout for people to join the department so I'm not sure what the "Offical" is getting at. It sounds like it might be something personal.

I just want people to know the facts and then they can make up their minds then. Cause you know what they say about opinions. They are like @$$holes and everybody has one!;)

I really don't want anyone to know who I am, but I think I know who the board person is that does not like the chief. She always says bad things about the fire department behind it's back. And other things to. I don't think someone who works for a town should be saying some of the things that she is saying. I was always taught to be loyal to your town and work to make it better.

A couple things to add here. Two of my sons are volunteer firemen here in Lewiston, and both are on Albert Township Fire Dept. John has worked very hard to get my younger son in. Because my son is dyslexic, and had to do fire school by the seat of his pants. I studied with him, but I couldn't read him the tests outloud. He had to struggle through. John encouraged him to try , and he passed on the first try. I believe in my heart and soul that the Dept. is growing and replacing the older guys at a rate which makes sense. The fire school costs the township a lot of money for each student, so they must be choosy, and take people that will follow through and then stay here and do their duty. There are also background histories to worry about. There are issues about those things because you are often going into someone's house, and they can't be in there if the place is on fire. The township person shouldn't bad mouth the fire dept. I agree. This sounds like something personal. Therefore, it should be kept quiet about, as it isn't township business. We have a great steady, reliable dept. Both fire and EMS, they are quick ,and efficient. So for any out of towner to bad mouth us, well, try calling someone else when you are here and have an emergency, ok? That work for you?

Oh look, an internet tough guy! Been reading some of your posts. Your type make me laugh. You sit behind your computer screen and take cheap shots at people you don't know. You'd probably pee your panties if you ever had to face someone in person. How about you crawl out of your parents basement and confront the people you have a beef with? But sadly, we all know that you would never do that!
