"Your must be a re-re", I hope of all's sake you don't have children. By the way you post blogs on this site they surely won't be brought up with any morals or ideals, or respect. Yeah, tell them fighting is OK and that they should think nothing of it. Great example you are setting there! It's because of folks like you that our society is getting to be in the shape it is!
You sound like a one of those parents who would run out onto the field at a midget football game and smack on of the small players becauce he tackled your son too hard! Am I right? After all, midget football is a full contact sport! Moron!

The fight at East was not Lady Spartans fault at all. They were trying to break up the fight, while beckley's girls were trying to keep it going. Only 7 girls from East were suspended Kelli Morgan, Kelsie Still, Stephani Keys, Alex Dalton, Elizabeth Bradley, Lindsey Stidom, and Emily Clemons. The rest of the girls were allowed to play. In my opinion I don't think these girls should be punished for trying to help there own teammate. But that does not mean I think fighting is right, or that I support it. But for exanple. If the fight had broken out in front of Woodrow's bench I am almost positive Morgan would've been VERY hurt. But since East's girls were there to protect her, she walked away without a scratch. Everyone should be thankful that the team was there for their family

11 players, Woodrow assistant coach suspended

Athletic director says it’s time to move on after last Friday’s game brawl

By Jackie Ayres
Register-Herald Reporter

The state Secondary School Activities Commission suspended 11 players from Woodrow Wilson and Greenbrier East high schools for two games apiece Tuesday for their roles in a fight that occurred during a girls basketball game last Friday night in Fairlea.

Six players from Woodrow Wilson and five from Greenbrier East were suspended, according to SSAC Executive Director Gary Ray.

Separately, a Woodrow Wilson assistant coach was suspended for two games by principal Bob Maynard, athletic director John Lilly said.

“Under the ejected players policy in the rules and regulations, those ejected players are suspended for their teams’ next two contests,” Ray said.

“The officials wanted to make sure that they got the correct individuals. They didn’t want anybody punished who did not deserve to be punished, of course.”

Ray said he felt the officials and the administrators at the game “did a commendable job making sure the situation did not escalate any further.”

Lilly would not identify the Woodrow players who were suspended, saying they were minors.

Meanwhile, both Lilly and Nelson Spencer, director of secondary education for the Raleigh County school system, refused to identify the assistant coach who was suspended or provide a reason why the action was taken.

“As far as we’re concerned, the issue is closed. We feel the appropriate punishment was issued, and neither team, to my knowledge, disagreed with the punishment,” Lilly said.

He asserted it was time to quit talking about fighting and time to concentrate on basketball and upcoming games.

Greenbrier East coach Jim Justice would say only that “the entire Woodrow bench was suspended and half of the Greenbrier East bench.”

He added,“It was a highly contested game, and I’ve got all the respect in the world for both groups of kids at both programs. It’s just an unfortunate thing.”

The incident continues to be investigated by the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Department, which arrested one spectator from Beckley at the scene and charged him with battery on a police officer and obstructing an officer.

Sheriff Jim Childers told The Register-Herald on Tuesday he had not yet come to a decision on any additional charges, saying he was still in the process of reviewing video footage of the incident with the county prosecutor.

A local channel provided its video footage to the prosecutor and sheriff.

“That portion of the video captured is very clear and concise,” Prosecutor Pat Via said Tuesday.

Via declined further comment on the pending investigation.

11 suspended in Woodrow-GE girls brawl
The Secondary School Activities Commission completed its investigation Monday and 11 girls basketball players from Greenbrier East and Woodrow Wilson were suspended for Friday's benches-clearing brawl.

The Secondary School Activities Commission completed its investigation Monday and 11 girls basketball players from Greenbrier East and Woodrow Wilson were suspended for Friday's benches-clearing brawl.
East has five players suspended for two games, which is the rule for ejections, while Woodrow has to sit six players. Both teams lose their leading scorers for two games.
East and Woodrow were each left with four players on the court after a fight broke out and the benches emptied late in the fourth quarter Friday in Fairlea. All bench players were banished to the locker room by game officials. In addition, two Woodrow fans were ejected from the gym and another was arrested.
"There have been from both teams multiple violations of the rule and the ejection policy has been applied,'' said SSAC executive director Gary Ray.
Ray said the suspensions, which take effect immediately, are for players who received technical fouls during the game or technicals for leaving the bench area during the altercation. He said the suspended players may still practice with the team, but can't attend games or travel with the team.
"The administrations from both schools and the coaches worked very close with us to bring this thing to a closure,'' Ray said. "I was very pleased with the cooperation we received in working through this. I think the programs are trying to get this taken care of and put behind them.''
Ray said the game officials report was completed Monday.
"It took us some time,'' he said. "The officials requested we look at [the report] with them and we felt confident they did a nice job with it and got it correct. The [game] officials did a good job.''
East (8-3), ranked No. 8 in the Class AAA Associated Press poll, defeated Class A Mercer Christian 76-39 Tuesday night in the Coal Classic in Beckley. East used junior varsity and freshman players to fill out its roster.
East will play the winner of Class AA No. 1 Summers County-George Washington Saturday in the title game. East coach Jim Justice couldn't be reached for comment Tuesday.

Woodrow is scheduled to play at Class AAA No. 5 Nitro Thursday. The Flying Eagles were also set to play host to No. 10 Capital Tuesday, but the game was postponed because of snow.

"We lose two starters and all of our bench,'' said Bostick. "I'll just bring junior varsity [players] up. They're going to play really hard, but there's a reason they're JV.''

Bostick said he didn't learn of the suspensions until a Gazette reporter contacted him about the matter Tuesday. All 55 of West Virginia's counties were out of school Tuesday because of snow.

"I haven't heard anything,'' he said. "Whatever they decide, we'll do. We just want to get over it. We were playing it safe anyway. We already suspended our [girls].''

Bostick said he recently received a phone call from the syndicated TV newsmagazine Inside Edition requesting an interview.

"[They] wanted to talk to me about the game Friday night,'' he said. "I called them back and left them a message,'We want to move on.' We've got other games and I wasn't interested in talking to them.''

Ray said he hopes the experience has been a lesson to the players involved.

"Those consequences have to be served for certain types of behavior,'' he said. "That type of behavior can't be condoned in our type of activities.''

Kelli Morgan was provoked until she reacted. I wish she would have kept her composure but it has been awesome watching her skills down through the years. Since she is possibly the best player in the state, I'm sure others would love to have her not on the court. I appreciate her love of the game and wish her nothing but the best. She is the COMPLETE basketball player.

No different than Walker except he didn't throw any punches, but he is such a bad person. Just like her he may be the best player in the state lets have the same expectations for her. I not talking down on her they are just kids hopefully they learn something from their situations. When your one of the best someone will always be gunning for you!

Why do we continue to participate in sports events with Beckley there always seems to be a problem with every sport girls softball, soccer, basketball girls and boys on and on and on. So stop playing if the kids in your neighborhood are bad Stop Playing or allowing you child to play. I remember a volleyball game we went to Beckley and it was like a war zone we were escorted in and out is that healthy for the kids...?

Come on give me a break WWHS is a far better school the only reason GBE haas a team is because of Jim Justice and he can't beat WWHS with out paying the Ref's under the tableor better yet scouting players from Virginia and moving their whole family to town and giving them a job to try and make the team better now what's that saying about the white ghetto girls that live in the county? That you aren't good enough lol your own coach feels that you aren't good ball players his desire is to beat bernie bostic we all know he lost the fight when he tried to buy his way in as wwhs's coach when their coach was Coach White and got sued and loss. Bottom line is the has always been bad blood with these two teams and it always will when you got these enbreed kids from Greenbrier County that are from the hood oh yes whites are ghetto too lol not all are trailer trash!!
