TEN DOLLARS???? That's Lewisburg for you. Took me all of 12 seconds to find out all about who paid for what. And you wonder why NO ONE wants to help your city? You biotch when a private business invests in its fa├žade, you biotch when a dilapidated space is reinvented with private money and then DONATED to the city, you biotch if a group attempts to do anything positive......you all just WHINE about imaginary "tax money" like you have any clue where funding comes from.

I remember when the auto factories up north were booming. People came from everywhere to work there. Everyone mixed well and no one complained about people coming to work from other areas. The north did not look at the newcomers as competition. The unions, lazy people and lawyers closed the factories down and folks from TN who moved up north were a part of that too. Now the north comes down to work where the work is and they catch all sorts of ridicule. Wonder why? Competition?
Because they are uneducated in their own history. They swallow all the BS their political leaders tell them and never check it out to see if it is true. It is easier to blame their troubles on someone else than to seek and accept the truth. The ones that pretend to accept you are the first to stab you in the back when you walk away. And sadly, it has never changed. They are still just as ignorant and uneducated as ever. They believe the lies about Unions and won't accept how they would not have what they had had it not been for the Unions that fought for it. That was before Corporations saw $$$ by moving overseas, NOT because of anything the Unions did. But the Union became the scapegoat. Now that their empire is falling apart in China, India and else where, they are making less and less profit and coming back because it is cheaper than shipping. It is getting harder for them to use child labor, workers are demanding more wages and benefits, overhead such as building safer buildings and work places is eating all the profits they once made. Oh yes, the blade is swinging the other direction now.(Check out the Labor/Union movement in Europe especially in Germany where they all get a minimum of two week-4 weeks PAID vacation). You don't see those companies running to India and China. Wonder why?

Frankly my dear, I say let the square do what the square thinks it needs to do.

The "park" on the square is finished and there's hopes that there will be regular gatherings there, book clubs, poetry readings, and new coming musician groups. As for the jewelry store, go ask the owners or go offer your time and money to fix if the way you want it! Finally, the LDA is very different than the way it has been described by the majority of you. Their meetings are held regularly and everyone is welcome. Why don't you all come to a meeting and find out what they are truly about!

Lewisburg square is a joke, in my opinion. Go to other towns & visit their square (Shelbyville, Fayetteville, Columbia), lots of nice little shops & restaurants. Our square can't keep anything in business.

Compare the population and geography of those cities to Lewisburg. Size for size, Lewisburg is doing great! Shelbyville has twice the population and Columbia has THREE times the population!!! Then also look at the geography and you'll see that both Fayetteville and Shelbyville both well connected by major highways and closer to other major cities. Lewisburg is not as well situated as those other cities. So over all, Lewisburg is doing fine for what it has to work with.

It took from 10 to 20 years for Shelbyville, Fayetteville, Columbia AND Franklin to develop into what they became and/or are becoming! And they ALL started where Lewisburg is today! It also took intelligent, concerned, caring, progressive and proactive citizens to make it happen! Complaining is easy... Pro-Action takes discipline!

<quoted text>Yes, Phillips gave the land but the iron work was done with a state grant. Ask Bob and he will tell you.
If a lack of general knowledge and the overwhelming amount of overt cynicism in this forum were currency, Lewisburg would be a Boomtown and it would not have to worry about it's future at all! And if it weren't so sad that some folks can only contribute rumors, pessimism and suspicion, instead of proactive dialog and solutions, it would almost be funny!

Bob Phillips GENEROUSLY paid for EVERYTHING but an engineer to study the property, analyze and translate for development the structural viability of the O'more College design (which, by the way, was done free of charge and was great experience for their students), develop a plan for proper drainage and advise on the impact the design might have on adjacent properties and the neighborhood! The LDA paid for that engineer with $10,000 of the $15,000 in grant money it received from the Tennessee Downtowns Program! To qualify for that grant, 6 of their members went through the year plus long program developed by the State of TN to educate concerned citizens on the changing demographics and economic impact "progress" is having on MANY small towns across the State and Country! That seems a small price to pay for the potential it brings for long term community improvements and considering NO ONE in the LDA gets paid to participate!

If you want to Bitch... I get it! God knows you have plenty of reasons to be mad at City, County, State and Federal Government! But to only Bitch and not bring any possible solutions to our collective problems is just ignorant and immature! If you genuinely want to see change... Stop feeding the beast by wasting your time and posting nonsense here on TOPIX and get involved! It will make you feel good about yourself and perhaps benefit the community you seem to doubt so much!

Peace!
