Motorcyclist dies in crash
Thursday, March 29, 2012

Marshall County Tribune

A Marshall County man died in a motorcycle crash on Highway 99 Wednesday evening, the Tennessee Highway Patrol has reported.
George R. Pruitt Jr., 52, of Harthstone Drive, Chapel Hill, was stopped on the highway waiting to turn left onto Hearthstone when a pickup struck his motorcycle from behind, according to Dispatcher Greg Griffin at the Tennessee Highway Patrol post at Lawrenceburg.

The crash was at approximately 5:33 p.m. Wednesday, Griffin said quoting information from Trooper John Judge.

The pickup truck that struck the motorcycle was a Dodge 2500 driven by Clifford Jones IV, 38, of Milltown Road.

Judge was continuing his investigation Thursday when no charge had been filed, Griffin said Thursday morning. There were no passengers on the motorcycle or in the truck

I heard that the truck was going about 80mph.

Can anyone confirm this?

I nearly bought it a few years ago in front of Whites Market on 31a in the identical way. I was stopped and waiting to turn into Whites when I heard squealing tires, looked in the mirrors, and saw a truck bearing down on me fast. I gunned it to get out of the way and he just took off. Dangerous...my guess is he never knew what hit him.

Maybe there should be some sort of law to require riders to wear vibrant colors, like the reflective jackets that wrecker drivers wear often. I know lots of people who ride. It is a sad situation for the family.

The problem is most people on the road are more focused on there phone , radio , ipod , putting on makeup...I saw a guy read n a damn book driving on the interstate this morning !!! Plus everyone is always in a hurry to get nowhere . I had a woman pull out in front of me the other day and passed 3 cars on a double yellow just to pulls into walmart !

Amen to the last post. I really notice and look for bikers when driving because I ride, but they are difficult to spot sometimes. Your comment about driver distractions is dead on!

THe rider of the bike was george pruitt. He was an experienced rider who did not like to ride after dark because of drivers who did not look out. He was stopped to turn left and was hit from behind by a truck driven by clifford jones of lewisburg according to the paper. He was a great friend to everyone and a good dad. He was just a down home country boy who would do anything for anyone and loved kids. Reports say speed and alcohol played a part in it. It's a shame that someone that good has to die before people pay attention to what the hell they're doing on the road. Motorcycle riders have no chance against cars in the hands of idiots.

According to the law, you are suppose to have your vehicle under control at all times...If alcohol was a factor, Then the truck driver is at fault

I was present as the accident happened. A sight & sound I may never forget. Honestly, I don't believe Mr Jones was speeding (definitely not 80mph) as speculated in earlier post. I could not tell you if he was on the phone, texting, or something else. Obviously, he was not paying attention. His comment was, "he came out of nowhere!" I did let him know the motorcycle was stopped waiting for me to pass so he could turn left. Another tragic accident that shouldn't have happened!

Begs the question did the motorcycle have a blinker on and was the blinker bright enough to get someone attention? I know often on long two lane highways one can become hypnotized. Perhaps a brighter light might have made a difference? I haven't ridden in years, but I have a lot of miles on a bike.
