Call Your Home a Church

Columbia, TN

#79 Aug 2, 2013
Why not call all old buildings, houses, lots, historical, or churches, and put the rest on Greenbelt, give those all funding, grants, and tax breaks?
What then Tax the homeowners till they lose their homes and have to sell out and move from having too pay more of their unfair share of the taxes?

I wish the tribune would of received some of those comments. It would of eliminated a dozen of comments on topics.

I for one just wanted it done right so we can start to come again. I am glad they plan on doing it right.

The restrooms have been an issue.
Like a lot of people we know, we always related the shape of a restrooms to the cleanliness of the kitchen and workers in any food service establishment we have attended.

the public is not allowed the kitchen of any eatery...therefore how can the cleanliness of the kitchen be compared to the "shape" of the restroom that everyone uses. just saying very unfair to hold 1 responsible for what the majority does...

I stand by what I said. The kitchen and personal are in plan view in many places. If any restaurant can not keep or want to keep the restrooms clean what do you think they think about the kitchen and their own personal hygiene?

New Owners Begging

Who has ever heard of a fundraiser to start a private business.? I heard the new ownwers are having fundraisers for their business. So we are suppose to donate to them like beggers to get their business running. Also heard that they are raising prices out the roof. Heard they are selling a family pack of 4 movie tickets, 4 drinks and 1 popcorn for $60. Gee, if true are they crazy? That would have been less than $30 with the old owners.
Tell me it isnt true

If that is indeed true, it is very, very sad. But you have to ask yourself, where were they raised? I never seen so many fund raiser in my life before I came to this county. Where I came from, we took care of ourselves, had insurance and relied on family. If you can't start a business on your own, by own money or borrowed from a bank or family/friend venture, don't do it because you are heading for a train wreck. Banks only lend money on sure bets and if raising price to achieve their goals, people both poorer or richer will react in their own way, but it will not be good for their master plan. I just hope it is not true. Can you think of another business the owners depended on the people to help start up? Even gas stations and restaurants serve thousands of people and some were operating for decades, should the people come to their rescue out of memories? If they pull it off and it is the world's greatest hit, would they give back? You would have to ask yourself, would they come running in with the local cavalry to rescue someone from Michigan who thought they would move here and buy the drive in? Where I come from, people first do everything to help themselves, then they rely on family and close friends. If none of that is available, you have to ask yourselves why not.
If they don't pull it off, or it is done half butt by splashing cheap white paint all over, do they blame the local community?
This place really makes one shake their head.

I have heard of a fund raisers called tax breaks!!!

Should we all hope the new owners go to the local industrial board, city, county, public officials and demand their fair share of County and City tax breaks for buying new equipment, and keeping open small business in Lewisburg, Marshall County!
Should what is fair for big business should also be fair for small business?

Why not have a cookout / fund raiser for the old owners as well give them a thank you for keeping the drive in open as long as they did?

Good Luck to Both !

i have read many post about how the old owners would have done better if they had done this or that, like they shut it down because they weren't doing well with the business. But I also have read, even quotes from the new owners , that the reason they didn't reopen was because of medical issues. In the past , Mr. Douglas has broken his back, had 4 or 5 strokes, has very little control of his right hand and arm for hand to eye coordination, and in just the past year has lost almost complete vision in one eye and alot of vision in the other. And in the past few weeks has found out that he has a rare type of blood cancer that has no cure and chemo is waiting in the wings. So why is it that most people assume it was financial the reason they didn't reopen. Why do people assume that he never bought the land because of "bad credit". It was plainly stated by a family member he DID try to buy it , years ago, but the property owner WOULD NOT sell. Or at least the woman that was in charge of it at the time, which is the actual owners mother. AND if he, the actual deed holder, had not gotten involved with it when he did, it would not have been sold this time. People always assume the worst in any situation. Whatever they can think to say, or hide behind a keyboard and type, to try and run people down. Seems to me this man has been through enough physically that if he didn't want to reopen in his advanced age, then so be it. It is more than obvious the years he put in were barely appreciated anyway. And another thing, just because someone, anyone closes a business, it does not mean they have not succeeded with it. Maybe they just want to do something else, or nothing at all. How many of you people out there wouldn't like to change jobs every now and then. They put there years in, if they want to retire, why try to run them in the ground. This is not a young couple with many years left together to work, they have done their work. I bet you would not expect your own parents to still be working full time when they reach the Douglas's age. If I am correct , they are both in their 70's.

If you know him, have you called or visited the sick?
Till you are ill and in pain you can never understand that man had a drive in him to operate Hwy #50 Drive-In.
He may not have owned it but maybe his name will be honored at the location by the new owners ,as a kindness.

My own husband heard from his specialist, this evening. He has an excellent report from his double thyroid biopsy.

Drive -in patrons will wish the Douglas family still had it once the Wakhams re-open it. Gone are the days of affordable family entertainment. Wakham is a smart guy, nerdy smart but smart. He is also a tightwad from what I have been told and does not seem to have a lot of common sense or people skills. Don't expct much improvement. I am guessing it will always be in the next phase or in the planning without any real change except higher prices. Hope that it makes it but doubt it will last 2 years. People around here will not pay $60 for a family to go to the drive-in.

The business isn't open, yet. How would you know what they will charge the movie goers? Quality comes with a price. An upscale Drive In may be better than the traditional ways. A family place is preferred over a sorted looking gang hangout. I have been to them in several areas of the country and when you are a mom with children, you look for a safer place in the dark, with your family. That goes for seniors, too.
The reputation of sex, drugs, drinking and whatever else is attached in most people's minds of a Drive In Theater.
The climate and insects will always be.
For the new owners, they made a good choice.

How do you know what choice they made? People, in most cases are only making comments to help ensure their success. We are in a strange community. What housing is being promoted by the powers to be? This will be a state ran, state and federal supported community real fast. Those types do not spend money and are use to getting things free. They have very little money and smokes and beer are not cheap now a days. I wish this area nothing but the best but leadership is saying they want to do this and that to help improve the area but in the same hand things that will drag down the area are promoted. You can not have it both ways. In today's society bad seems to prevails in most cases. In my humble opinion, the drive in needs to focus on $5 movie tickets and provide less profit for food and drink and keep the place very clean to succeed. The people will come. Cleaner people may set the bar higher for locals who have been trashing it for decades. They also need to learn to ban unclean, nasty mouth drunk idiots who are found to act a fool. Other places do. This area is just lucky to have them. That is why we have what we have.
