If sports are a waste of tax money, then lets take away band and drama also. Do you realize that sports include football, baseball, cheer leading, soccer, basketball, tennis, bowling and let's also do away with Beta club. Since over half of the Beta Club is involved in sports. What a joke. Lets give all those kids nothing to so and see what happens. All I know is I am watching those kids play a sport, then I'm

Abolish sports and make school about learning. Turn all the money that was previously wasted on sports into academic scholarships. Make all seniors take an exit exam. Those that fail go to mandatory military service for two years ( like Israel and Switzerland). I bet kids would be much more serious about making the grade.

Christians love their idols! Imagine if they loved Jesus as much as college football.

They gather for games while the seats remain empty at church.

They prepare feasts on game day for their worldly idol.

Check the books, taxes do not support the sports programs. All money recorded at the gates go back to the school. Check the facts. Teachers are paid to teach. They receive less overtime pay than any city or county worker. They put in countless hours for basically no pay. Check and see if I am a liar.

there's a lot of talk about other ways for youth to participate in sports, but the reality is, these other options are often times more expensive, and if not for the athletic program at schools, student althetes would not have the opportunity to develop. Some students excelt at studies and struggle to compete in sports. Some students excel at sports and struggle to compete academically. This does not mean that sports have no value in an educational system, especially since most educational systems have academic requirements for their student athletes.

Also, colleges enjoy seeing well-rounded students. There are a lot of items in every city and state budget that could be trimmed without affecting an aspect of school that encourages hardwork, communication, discipline, and, something that may seem trivial but is, in fact, important, socializing.

Not true. tax money subsidizes sports. abolish sports and make the priority academics!

"Mandatory" and the American concept of freedom do not go hand in hand. I cannot support forcing anyone into a situation where they have an increased chance of being killed based on poor academics. Besides, you will find that the military does not want people who have difficulty or simply refuse to learn. Like any other high tech fighting force, our military needs bright young people in its ranks, not dimwits or lazy people.

How about this instead? Let's set up a 10th grade diploma for those who wish to get the basics and move on to a job or certain vocational training. Let's keep the 12th grade diploma for those who wish to pursue college or more demanding vocational training. It is time to stop treating all students as if they are future Rhodes scholars. We are one of the few countries in the world hung up on this "all students can succeed" nonsense.

Back on topic, gut sports from the schools. The taxpayers are under no obligation to fund the hobbies of students. If parents wish to set up leagues on their own dime, then have at it. In a time when many people can't afford to go out to eat, why should they be under the threat of having their homes sold on the courthouse lawn just to pay property taxes that funds some kid's sports hobby?

About a million spent on the chapel hill football complex, hundreds of thousands on the kiney field house, tens of thousands spent all over the county for useless sports activities. Wake up, there are scores of activities for kids outside of the education process. School is not for fun people; its for skill set building that this country needs to survive. Get focused on what is important! Join a summer league if you want to watch jr. run bases or chase a ball.

Correct me if I am wrong! Did the lions club not donate money for the majority of the things built at Forrest. A lot of these sports are funded by gate money and concession stands. The small supplement is paid to the teacher by the tax payer. I think you would be amazed at the money that is brought into these programs from concessions, gates, donations and spent back into the Gym, fields, or whatever they use. The money brought in each year could possibly buy your house if not two of them.

Idk about chapel hill but I know for a fact now tax payer money has been spent on the Kenney building . The players raised the money themselves this spring to replace the floor ! More money is generated from football alone that all the other sports combined and very little of the cost of athletics is paid for with tax payer dollars !

One huge cost that you aren't accounting for is the insurance policy that covers student athletes. When a kid gets injured in practice or in a game, that injury is covered under a policy paid for by you and me, the taxpayers. Parents are not obligated to pay one penny for any injury. The cost of this insurance is quite expensive.

Why can't the theater buy a pull down screen and show current movies from 8pm on and all day Sat/Sun and have the kids work around the schedule? That would bring people into our community and spend money on food and possibly shop? We need change.

These small towns continue to admire and worship sports. That's why so many end up living in 70's style mobile homes and sucking the gubment teat. Enjoy your sports losers!

Man everyone on topix has the answer to all the questions. There is only one problem with that. We only had three people running for mayor recently. Where were all these topix people with all these answers. Why were you guys not running for mayor. Oh they were busy sitting on there computer talking about how great Farrar and Williams was.

For the record, many of our country's leaders were prolific athletes, including Presidents Cleveland (wrestling), Roosevelt (boxing,Harvard), Eisenhower (football, West Point), JFK (football, Harvard), Ford (football all-conference at Michigan), Carter (football, Naval Academy), Reagan (football,Eureka College) & George H. W. Bush (baseball, Yale). I could list all the current congressmen and women that were standout athletes but it would take all night. I recall a now deceased doctor in Columbia that played football at UT and one working there now that was an All-American gymnast. But you guys are right, sports are a waste of time played only by dumb kids that need their grades "padded" or given to them. Don't bother replying, you will never win this argument no matter how hard you try.
You must make your living sucking the taxpayer dry by sslacking off under the guise of sports. There are plenty of venues for participating in sports outside the school system. Get over it Socialist. Sports in school is a distraction from real learning. Even someone as ignorant as you can see the misguided priorty of sports over academic learning. Compare a college football coach's salary to that of the professors of science and mathematics. You have exposed yourself as being one of those 'dumb jocks' with 'padded grades'. lol. There is no arguement to win; your narrow minded opinion is your disability. Coach? Probably one of those fighting on the pee wee league ball fields. Drink your cheap beer and shut up! lol...

I'm glad you amuse yourself. You managed to do that and portray yourself as an imbecile all at the same time. So are you going to actually make an argument with facts and examples or just stick to name calling? That's what people do when they have nothing constructive to say. Well, back to the T-ball field I go.

Half of these ghetto losers don't even belong in college. They are treated like royalty because they can play sports. No wonder why we are a joke to the rest of the world now.
