Underage drinking on college campuses. Imagine?!

This problem started when? Maybe 300 years ago?

Actually it started when MADD persuaded everyone that those who were otherwise considered adults should not be allowed to drink alcohol until they were 21.

I otherwise support MADD, but I think they were wrong in this case.

I would be curious to see how close the 20 year olds are to their birthdays.

Someone who is 20 years 364 days old -- can't drink for a couple more hours. ugh.

Get a Grip this is not excellent work, this make me mad I feel my tax dollars can be used a little better than our State Police playing Mall Cops and chasing young adults around a college campus for having a few beers. Read the paper people we have biggger issues in this area than wasting police time on something this trival.

I think the tax dollars are specifically for the LCB or LCE (not sure what they call themselves nowadays). That's THEIR JOB. They are not patrol officers looking for other things, they are assigned to things that deal with alcohol violations. Wake up.

I applaud these officers for doing their job. Heck, a drunk girl could then claim she was raped and wouldn't be believed, like Ben Roethlisberger, although Ben didn't rape the girl, the girl's main sticking pt. was that she was drunk off her azz. These girls should know better while in college.

SU really needs to clean up their act. Wonder if the "Minor Patrol" has been to Wilson College lately ?? Wonder why taxpayers yell and scream about the local school districts but are calm and collected when it comes to the drunken state universities ??

Maybe someone needs to get their facts straight, only 3 of the 7 were actually SU students.

Everyone is assuming these underagers were drunk as a skunk stumbling down the middle of the road and the cops had to swerve to avoid hitting them. Why waste time to go out of your way looking for something this trivial. Why not put these guys to use with the drug task forces or hit a large college party full of underagers if they're so keen on cleaning up Ship. As a former Ship student, I can tell you that the alcohol consumption there is blown way out of proportion by the local population. Everyone blames these "reckless hellian" college students for any problems the town has. If you go to a campus of 7,000 students and only find 7 people under 21 who have booz in them (law states it could be a minimum of more/less 1 drink in their system), then I don't think you have an epidemic problem. The parents are the ones shipping their kids away from home. You don't go to school and catch the drunk flu and have it go away four years later. If you think Ship is full of a bunch of alchies, go visit PSU main campus on a weekend.

Raising the drinking age from 18 to 21 has saved lives... it's a fact, not an opinion.

See how you feel after you, a family member, or friend is hurt or killed by one of those drivers that are doing wrong.

The article says nothing about driving. They were not driving, otherwise they would have been given DUI's.

Funny how thing go arround in life.I'd bet those same LCB, and St Cops drank underage when the were in school.
I'd also bet they are over steeping the legal rights of the students, but who cares, right? they are just dumb kids, that won't fight the system,or will they?

Nowadays? Give me a break, people have been promiscuous from the beginning of times.

My question is who is buying the alcohol for these young people? Why are they not being charged with supplying alcohol to minors?

Fight the system in Shippensburg? You've got to be kidding me. How many times have you read the description "glassy-eyed and smelled of alcohol" from Ship police? And the DJ believes every word of it. I certainly don't support the destructive behavior that accompanies some of the alcohol consumption in Ship but if you're just minding your own business and not bothering anybody, there are plenty of other more "difficult" problems to deal with in town. Even the legal drinkers who are responsible enough to not get into a car are very uncomfortable walking in town. I know of one who hadn't had a drink and tripped on the sidewalk because she was walking in heels (this was early in the evening, not in the middle of the night). No sooner had she tripped than she heard sirens and a police officer had pulled up beside her. Targeting walkers who are not doing anything to stand out not only does NOTHING to fight the real problems in town but it discourages responsible behavior by making people feel that it's safer to get into a car than to risk walking the streets of Shippensburg! I totally agree with the poster that said if you really want to do something about the problems, bust a big party. Or use the "undercover" police to focus on the many drugs that could very easily be found and not the 20 year olds walking around after having a few drinks. It's like shooting fish in a barrel. I have no police training and I could approach people on any given night in Shippensburg and make 7 arrests for underage. Focus on the real problems please!

When did we start allowing outside police forces to troll on campus? Is this a new policy?

If these students are such a threat and they are not even driving, the police should station themselves outside the Moose, VFW, and the Legion to look for drunk drivers.
