"Before Bachmann and Gohmert contemplate future trips abroad, they might want to bone up a little bit on history and facts instead of relying on Glenn Beck broadcasts. But more than anything, they need a refresher course on who was behind the 9/11 attacks. They insult this country and the memory of more than 3,000 9/11 victims by getting it so embarrassingly wrong."
Barely three days before today’s anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, we were reminded once again of the dangers America confronts from radicals who get on airplanes, travel to foreign lands and shock the world by speaking in front of microphones. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota joined fellow tea partying Reps. Louie Gohmert, sadly of Texas, and Steve King of Iowa on a trip to Egypt, where they praised the restoration of military dictatorship and the overthrow of a democratically elected government.
Bachmann didn’t just stop with that misportrayal of American values. She somehow managed to confuse Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood with the perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks (Afghanistan-based al-Qaeda for those who don’t remember), and congratulated Egypt’s military leader for holding them at bay.
“We have seen the threat that the Muslim Brotherhood has posed around the world. We stand against this great evil,” Bachmann said.“We remember who caused 9/11. We remember who it was that killed 3,000 brave Americans.”
As reported by The New York Times, Bachmann said the United States and Egypt “have that common enemy, the terrorists who have shown themselves so recently in the form of the Muslim Brotherhood. We don’t have a choice. They must be defeated.”
Some al-Qaeda members had roots in the Muslim Brotherhood but left because they found it too moderate. Attaching the entire organization to the 9/11 attacks is like saying that Timothy McVeigh used to be a Republican, therefore the entire party is behind the Oklahoma City bombing.
Never mind that the Muslim Brotherhood stepped out immediately after the 9/11 attacks to wholeheartedly condemn what occurred, saying,“[We] strongly condemn such activities that are against all humanist and Islamic morals.…[We] condemn and oppose all aggression against human life, freedom and dignity anywhere in the world.”
Never mind that the Muslim Brotherhood is not on the State Department’s list of foreign terrorist organizations. In Bachmann’s mind, they are. And over in Egypt, she speaks for America, it seems.
Gohmert compared the military coup leader, Gen. Abdul-Fattah el-Sisi, to George Washington, The Times reported, and praised a system where the rule of law is “king.” Never mind that the military takeover was a violation of Egyptian law and that the military completely overlooked the rule of law when it shot unarmed protesters and engaged in sweeping, arbitrary arrests of protesters and political activists.
Egypt’s radical Islamists have not behaved like angels, neither when democratically elected President Mohammed Morsi was in power nor after he was seized and placed in a secret prison somewhere.(The military won’t say where he is. That falls under Gohmert’s rule-of-law-is-king standard.) Some radicalized Islamists are from the Muslim Brotherhood and some are not. But one thing that is guaranteed to turn a non-violent moderate toward radicalism is to shoot him, arrest him for protesting, and yank away the democratic rights that he and thousands of other Egyptians fought so hard to win."
The depths of Tea Bagger stupidity have now reached the dangerous stage, WTF are these idiots doing abroad dribbling out this nonsense for all the world to see!?!?
Please get a hold of your most extreme idiots, this country does not need self inflicted wounds of stature, expectation and diplomacy!
On a cracker I can't believe anyone would think this is a good thing to do!
