Our kids dont need longer days, they need BETTER teachers,I have been in other countries where the school days is only four hours, and two shifts,8 to 12 and 1 to 5 and in case you are wondering these are countries of the third world and if you take your time and do a quick research you will find out that they have the highest rate of alfabetization...wich is 98% and ONE teacher can teach every subject,so focus on educate our teachers better instead of make it a long boring day for our kids.

I think the Teachers do a great job ! I think the Parents could do a better job.
I also think, extending the school day is ok, if you reduce the amount of homework sent home every night. I think that too much homework takes a way from family time. and makes the nights of busy households, hectic and frustrating. Instead of enjoy our children and other aspects of life. we are fighting with them to " get the homework done"

Cesar if you could construct a sentence we could understand what you were trying to tell us. Here is a little help with your mumble jumble…. *** don.t is don’t *** days, they is really days(space) they ***teachers,I is really teachers(space) I *** hours, and is really hours (space) and *** alfabetization is really Alphabetization *** wich is really which *** subject,so is subject(space)so Now instead of worrying about a 3rd world countries you should get a dictionary and/or try this new thing called spell check!

maybe cardozo should go back to school with all the mistakes he/she wrote. He/She will probably tell the kids to drop out like he/she did. Go back to school and learn proper English and Grammer 1st grade.

People! its not about me! what difference does it make if I can or cant spell right? it is about a REAL FACT! what I wrote above is REAL,its not that I worry about third world countries or if you people ignore that the name cesar is from SPAIN and not from italy (its not my fault you people limited knowledge)its about QUALITY instead of QUANTITY! besides,I may have not spelled my words right but I am sure that you understand what I mean and I could have wrote my opinion in my language (without gramatic mistakes) and you wouldnt have the capacity of understand me like I do in your language, just think openly I mean there is some SMART people outside the perimeters of this great nation!!

He "speaks" better than most. At least he is typing in english. Isn't this discussion supposed to be about longer school days?

Cesar: If that is really how you spell your name, you obviously are lacking in shall we say the intellectual department. The problem is not educated teachers, it is the kids and especially the parents. Most of these teachers have Masters degrees compared to someone like you that has what, maybe a 5th grade education? A lot of the kids are to busy playing video games or spending to much time on-line on the Internet and not enough time hitting the books. And the parents are mostly to blame because they think that if they put their kids on the bus in the morning and send them to school that their job is done! They think that it is solely the responsibility of the teachers to educate their children. How many parents really sit down with the kids and help them learn. I'll bet one of the biggest complaints from teachers is the lack of ACTIVE participation from parents in the education process. The children also learn attitudes from there parents...if the parent has no incentive to learn why should the child act any different. For example, if YOU have children in the school system I would imagine that not only you but the school system considers them "Special".
Enough said! Oh, learn to spell you name man, unless of course your mother thought it would be really cool to have a son named after gourmet dog food, then it would be correct!

I would agree with you in that the biggest complaint from teachers is probably the lack of parent participation. I would imagine that the biggest complaint from parents is poor teachers. So who's right?
How will a longer day improve parent participation? How will a longer day inprove poor quality teachers? I can't really see a longer day doing much more than costing more dollars.

Less Homework / Paul,
You hit the nail on the head. The only thing that will be gained by adding an extra 1 1/2 hours to the school day is giving some parents an extra 1 1/2 hours of "babysitting time". Why is it that some students get good grades, and do well in school an others do not? Why do some people blame the teachers when students do not get good grades, but never give them credit when they have just as many students that do get good grades? Maybe it's not the teachers fault, maybe its that when the kids leave school and go home there isn't a parent there to ask them "how school was, what did they learn, did you do anything interesting, you did, why was it so interesting, thats good, what do you have for homework, sure take it easy for a while but make sure you finish your homework before dinner, do you need any help, ok lets check over your homework, let me help you study for your test tomorrow, good job getting an "A" on that test, I"m proud of you". Or maybe there is but they are just not asking the right questions.
Learning is not a 8:00 to 3:30 job!!!!!!!!

WHO CARES how Cesar spells his name.. get over it people. The thread should be a discussion of the pros and cons of a longer day....
Paul: other than the stupid dig on Cesar's name... your points are valid !! Parents should participate more.

Belive it or not, there are actually more people in the world who have spelled their name like the poster here does. Why not do some research before you post stupid comments about it? You can't tell me that you who think you are so highly educated have not heard of either Cesar Chavez or César Romero?
César Aparecido Rodríguez, Brazilian footballer César Augusto da Silva Lemos, Brazilian footballer, also known as César Maluco César Baldaccini, French sculptor César Chávez, United States farm worker, labor leader, and civil rights activist César Delgado, Argentine footballer Cesar Garcia, Filipino Director General of the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency César Jiménez Jiménez, Spanish footballer César Martín, Spanish footballer Cesar Millan, professional dog trainer César Pelli , Argentine architect César Rodríguez Alvarez, Spanish footballer César Romero, United States actor César Sampaio, Brazilian footballer César Sánchez, Spanish footballer César Vinicio Cervo de Luca, Brazilian footballer

See? some of you people have a lot to learn, not only that my name exist but that having the kids in school for 8 hours WONT improve their learning, and you know what? I posted an article some time ago about activities for our kids after school and it got published and I got a lot of phone calls to share my ideas and I couch soccer for 22 kids including my son,and I take those kids to help clean the city EVERY spring,I encourage them to recycle and they are doing it! and by the way I have my two children in the school system my son just got high honors for 3 terms in a row like he did in elementary and middle school and my daughter ia an A - B student and you know WHY that is? I GET INVOLVED! I help my kids with their home work EVERYDAY because i dont need a master degree to do math without a calculator, and I graduate from high school, but what I sense here is that some of you people want longer days and are willing to pay just to get rid of your kids little longer,in our home we dont play stupid vidoe games instead we sit around the table and talk about things,we dont spend hours in front of the computer instead we go to the gym,and ONE MORE TIME,we really need to make those teachers work harder to earn those MASTER degrees, and some good and affordable activities after scool for our kids ,I, C E S A R CARDOZO,am doing my job with my kids and some of the kids of our town......ARE YOU??????????
