Here is an eye opener. A recent email posts an 8th grade final exam from 1895.
Salina, Kansas from the original document on file at the Smokey Valley Genealogical Society and Library and reprinted by the Salina Journal.
There are 5 timed tests (5 hours), 10 questions per test.
Try it...

Here are 5 from each test.

Grammar (1 hour)...Name the parts of speech and define those that have no modifications.

Arithmetic...(1 hour 15 Min)District #33 has a valuation of $35,000.
What is the necessary levy to carry on a school seven months at $50 a month, and have $104 for incidentals?

US History (45 min)...Relate the causes and results of the Revolutionary War.

Orthography (1 hour)
What is meant by the following: alphabet, phonetic, orthography, etymology, syllabication.

Geography (1 hour)...
Describe the process by which the water of the ocean returns to the sources of rivers.

An 8th grade final. Unbelievable!!!!
