While I believe your heart is in the right place, you comments about the quality of the Housatonic River water and sediment quality are alarmist. First, PCBs are just about insoluble in water. Second, although PCBs to adhere strongly to sediments, there is no mechanism that readily carries those PCBs from sediments into plants like corn. Finally, while we would all rather not have any chemical residues in our bodies, the fact is that all of us do have tiny amounts of PCBs in us. However, there is not scientific evidence that these PCBs are doing any of us any harm. I know this is hard to believe given all the bad science that is repeated in the press, but it is true nonetheless.

You tell 'em,'Jim.' And just keep bringing those good things to life.:-)
As a side note, just how much do you get paid to be a GE flack? Whatever it is, it's not enough. Just make sure the next time you're at the office, you ask 'em to put some extra PCBs in the water cooler. I mean, after all, they're so harmless, right?

Actually, I have never made a dime from GE, thanks for asking. But I do believe that talking from a perspective of good science is more important than talking from the top of your head without any scientific backing. So, have a good day.

From the EPA's website:
"PCBs have been demonstrated to cause a variety of adverse health effects. PCBs have been shown to cause cancer in animals. PCBs have also been shown to cause a number of serious non-cancer health effects in animals, including effects on the immune system, reproductive system, nervous system, endocrine system and other health effects. Studies in humans provide supportive evidence for potential carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects of PCBs. The different health effects of PCBs may be interrelated, as alterations in one system may have significant implications for the other systems of the body. The potential health effects of PCB exposure are discussed in greater detail below."
Of course, what I suggest is that Jimbo head on over to upstate NY, where his friends at GE are paying to dredge the Hudson River. I'm sure they can spare a few extra gallons of the stuff for you to chug-a-lug, Jim old boy. lol
