a treasured Heritage and historic Tyringham Farm "Sunset Farm" wound out it's history finally auctioning off all their buildings and 450 acres for a paltry 585.000. The Hale family has worked and lived on this farm for over 150 years. They gave up farming as unsustainable and ventured into restaurant and special events business including weddings and wedding parties/dancing. The restaurant never seemed to take off, the wedding events became noxious to the neighborhood so the business plan hoped for fizzled. Serious debt and serious management issues conspired to an eventual spiraling effect resulting in the need to have the Auction to meet loan obligations. Sad story, absolutely a prize piece of land in the perfect Town location....We miss the day of Arnold and Willis Hale. We wish Donny,Mary and Alice well as their new next door neighbors Dan Bernard & family move into the farm houses (the Hales have a home next to the farm)

Just curious..... How is a 450 acre parcel of prime land in Tryringham valued at only $850,000?

Why did they lose permits?

As with Eastover and England Brothers as two examples, it's most likely another case of kids/relatives with no business sense or ability to sustain/maintain the hard work, blood, sweat and tears of their previous generations and therefore they let this gem run right into the tank. It's hardly surprising and this is what happens with nepotism and entitlement all the time, it rarely, if ever works.

Sally--First I think that the farm total land area is 250 acres. The other number is a pipe dream of the "eagle" and the whole thing is tied up in restrictions such as conservation and others. I do not think anyone can develope any of it. And who cannot be named is right on about the kids cannot do business and the leins and lawsuits have been the "kids" downfall. She has ruined everything she has had anything to do with. TOO BAD IT IS REALLY SAD.

They defaulted on a 140,000 loan? They could have rented the place out, taken a loan from a friend, sold the place on their own. How does someone LOSE a property of that value for nonpayment on a 140,000 dollar loan? They probably could have taken a job at McDonald's and made the payment on that. Sounds like MORE than bad business to me sounds like INSANITY.

"I feel sad for the family," he said. "The family has lived here for generations."

But first you must learn to smile as you kill.

How 'bittersweet'.

People in the real estate trade are little more than pirates, vermin, and blood suckers.

Hope the farm is invaded by moles, ground hogs, ticks, fleas, misquitos and all other sorts of 'bittersweet' creatures to enhance the new owners life there, down on the farm. A good lightning strike would bring a new light of understanding 'bittersweet'.

(got to wonder if there was any behind-the-scenes action to dislodge the Sunset Farm. But, money talks -- nobody walks --. My symapthys to the Hale family)

IMHO the key to small business success is low overhead, both business and personal.

And the trouble with banks is that they want their money back. And I've been told, "WITH INTEREST."

So, tell me, why didn't you go to the auction and bid more? Then the headline could have read......What? You tell me? "Blog Posting Guy/Gal Phones In Spactacularly High Bid In Free Market"?
Please don't get me going.

In May 2008, I was asked by the Town to inspect the place when they were ready. The town felt it should be done by a neutral third party. I agreed. I was to be paid by the Hales. I was called the following weekend by Chris. She said she was ready and wanted an inspection ASAP. I scheduled it for Sunday to accomodate her schedule. When I got there, the place had not even been finished. I asked to see the building permit. They didn't have one. I asked to see the septic design, because they should of put in a new septic ( increased flow) they were not going to do a new septic. They wanted to have a "holding Tank" That's not allowed in new construction. The list goes on and on. Anyway to cut a corner regardless of code violations they were doing. I wrote up my report and sent to to the Hales, and to the Town. I understand Chris went to the selectmen and wanted to know who sent me, and she never asked for an inspection. Needless to say they did not even go before planning board before this. They thought they were just going to open as a catering place.
I was also not paid.
