I heard it happened in Wilkes County, and the hunter was on his own land, but baiting illegally. I don't really know the details.

Anyone else?

Hickory Daily Record::

State wildlife officials say a veteran officer shot and killed a hunter in self-defense after a confrontation.

A spokesman for the North Carolina Wildlife Commission says the shooting happened early Saturday morning on private property in Wilkes County.

Captain Rusty Hunter says Wildlife Officer Mark Minton was patrolling during the first day of turkey hunting season when the confrontation happened.

He says there is no evidence suggesting the officer confused the hunter with an animal. Instead, it appeared the officer was protecting himself.

Minton is on administrative leave while the State Bureau of Investigation reviews the incident.

The hunter's identity was not released. The commission did not immediately return a call for comment on Sunday.

As I already said, I don't know the details other than posting exactly what I was told. I am not a hunter, so I don't know the all the legalities. I was also told that the officer approached the man who was in a stand, and told him to come down for some reason. The man supposedly replied something like "If I come down, I'm going to kill you". That is where the self-defense comes in.

Again, that's all I heard, and don't know how much of it was accurate. Apparently the man was from Lenoir, but the incident occured in Wilkes Co. So I don't even know if it was his land, or not.

If this was Mr. Coffey's land why was the officer there? Sure can't locate one when there are hunters spot-lighting/shooting at deer from the road across my property.

wow, a 77 year old who climbs into a tree stand? he must have been pretty healthy to do that. i'm sure that we won't hear a lot about this case until a complete investigation is done.

No one was killed by an officer a few months ago. If your referring to the Brinkley guy, I believe they ruled it a suicide. Lose the conspiracy theories and stick to the facts. A good officer was lost in that incident for no apparent reason. Conspiracy theories hold no water.

The story here is the man told the officer "I'm gonna kill you" and then proceeded to point his shootgun at officer minton, as for the man being 77 I know several folks older than that who can still pull a trigger just fine,I have been confronted several times over the years by wildlife officers over the years and never have I felt threatened by them, they have always treated me with the same respect I showed them.
As for his daughter sayin he didnt know what a wildlife officer looked like, the patches on the shoulder and the badge on his chest would be a good clue she said he was deaf not blind. Officer Minton has a clean 12 yr record of serving the folks in NC, His service record in and of its self makes his story believeable,but we are all jumping to conclusions here.
As for being on your property Wildlife officers can and will come on private property unannounced as well they should I think if you have an issue with the being on your property they probly need to be there
