Are they're any other parents of Collettsville Ruritan ball players that are concerned that Collettsville doesn't do background checks on their volunteers? I thought they did until another parent brought it to my attention last week. Did you know you've got a couple coaches with drug and assault charges? It's not hard to find out's called a national criminal background check. Pay a few bucks a year and get a national check on all your volunteers. It'll be in the best interest of our kids.

If you are as upset as I am, go to and call the guys in charge at Collettsville to voice your opinion.

I wonder why this hasn't hit the NewsTopic? Kids have enough problems with corrupt assistants in public schools manufacturing meth. Now they can't play baseball without worrying about the coach having possible anger issues or "customers" visiting the ballfield? What is a parent to do? I do not reside in your area but hope that whomever resigns that position where children are concerned. I would say contact the Sheriff but then again you're probably seeing more support in your immediate community. Your information is public record -- maybe present copies to the area bulletin board and ruritan members or parents. It's a lawsuit just waiting to happen or even worse situations. The children's safety should be the Ruritans first priority in any community.

You probably wont find a league without some people helping that have "messed up" at one time or another. How long ago were the charges? People do change you know. Unfortunately their backgrounds dont. I know people like that, granted not from Collettsville, I would let coach my children before some volunteers that have "clean" criminal checks.
Its a judgement call and some of these volunteers are there because others wont help. The people who are over the program wouldn't let someone volunteer if they felt it would endanger children. If you dont like it, go volunteer yourself instead of voicing you opinion on this forum.

How about felons working with the Lenoir optimist youth football and basketball? And they do background checks It is everywhere. There is one that is allowed to be on the bench in our local high school games.

I just checked the NC Dept of Corrections website and one of the girls softball coaches up there did prison time for felony drug charges.

You started this only because you didn't get a team to coach. And this is why, you are a big mouth trouble maker. They ran you off from Gamewell for this same kind of stuff. The only charge that you are refering to was back in 1990. When the gentleman was 21. the charge has absolutely nothing to do with kids. Shall we start talking about the rumors that are going around about you and the place you work? Stop trying to stir up trouble. You will never get a team to coach at Collettsville or any other club in caldwell county after word gets out that you started this post. You are welcome to never cast a shadow on any piece of ground in Collettsville ever again. We don't need you or your kind of trouble. You are an outsider and now you will remain one.

How can an organization such as the Ruritans a or even the head of the ball fields condone this. I know we all have a past and that people change but Dern. I would like to know how bringing this to light is starting trouble.
Coaches are looked upon as role models and in some kids lives this is the only positive role model they might have. You don't become a convicted felon for teaching bible study.
Require the background checks and let the parent's know. What's it going to hurt

The only people that are concerned about it are the two that DIDN'T grow up here and didn't get a team to coach. Don't go away mad just go away if you don't like it.

I do not live there and do not have a dog in this fight but do work for the Department of Correction. I have no major problem with someone making a mistake and seeking forgiveness. What I do have a problem with is someone making it out to be no big deal. Roots are difficult to get up and if someone has failed in the past, they may resort back to their roots if problems become present in the future. This individual may be totally reformed and if he is, then that is wornderful. Full disclosure to parents, especially those sensitive to these types of issues would have possibly solved this problem from the beginning. As far as this person being a troublemaker, maybe that is how you view them. But maybe they are really not mad about getting a team. I do not know. You want them to forgive this individual...maybe you should do the same for them.
