There was a pretty bad accident in the northbound lane of 321 this afternoon. Anyone know if the people in it are ok?

Oops! I now see it says Hickory, lol. I was looking at Needing Peace's IP address location and was thinking it was Hudson or Lenoir possibly.

HICKORY - The driver of an out-of-control Toyota Tacoma slammed into seven cars, caused 15 injuries and sent five people to the hospital in an accident that blocked U.S. 321 for about two hours Saturday afternoon, Lt. Scott Hildebrand of the Hickory Police Department said.

Hildebrand said the HPD was notified Saturday by the Highway Patrol that a truck involved in multiple "hit and run incidents" in the Lenoir area was headed toward Hickory.

The driver of the truck, whose name has not been released, was traveling south in the northbound lane of U.S. 321 when he crossed into Catawba County. He struck a vehicle at the intersection of Old Lenoir Road and U.S. 321.

"He rear-ended the vehicle a couple of times," Hildebrand said.

He crossed into the southbound lane and drove onto Clement Boulevard, where he caused two more wrecks.

After he switched back to the northbound lane, he caused a five-car accident and disabled his own vehicle in front of the UPS store, Hildebrand said.

Fifteen people were injured and five of them were taken to Frye Regional Medical Center. "I would say three of those are critical," Hildebrand said.

The names of the injured parties were not released at the scene.

The incident is under investigation and authorities are working to determine what caused the Tacoma's driver to behave so erratically.

At this time it is unclear if alcohol or drugs were involved or if the driver had a medical issue that caused him to loose control of his vehicle, Hildebrand said. He added that it does not appear to be a road rage incident.

I despise drivers in North Carolina. I've driven up and down the east coast and by far - NC drivers are the most inconsiderate and aggressive.

I hate the way the majority of drivers around here exhibit no yield to a bicycle rider. If I am riding in a group they yield , but when riding solo, they are wreckless. And what's up with these teens texting and driving?

Sorry but there is no law against me riding my bike on the same road as gas powered vehicles. If you fail to yield to me, or drive recklessly as you pass me on my bike, you best not stop anytime soon for gas or cigs. You are not the only one who can break the law!

Get over yourself. Bikes shouldn't be on the road with gas-powered vehicles. They are purely a hazzard and should be ridden on paths or bike trails. And with your attitude, you're going to get yourself run right off the road. Bike riders and 50cc scooters AKA liquor cycles should all be ridden in a special area, and it's not the highway!

Just because there is no law against bicycles in the highway does not mean there should not be.There is no difference between a bike and a liquor cycle(MOPED).Neither one pays highway use taxes to help with the upkeep of our states highways. Both slow traffic to a crawl and actually cause accidents because you dont have enough sense to yield to a two ton vehicle.Either register your bikes like we have to or start peddling faster. Was there a bicycle involved in the 321 accident?

When they change the law to say I can't ride on the highway, I'll switch to an off road bicycle.

Why don't you ask the Caldwell County Chamber of Commerce what their opinion of bicycles on the highway is.

i have to agree with you 100%. to much traffic to advoid these slow moving death traps, they all hold up the movement of traffic causing others to move into on coming lane to advoid a collision. hate to see anyone get hurt, but dont hate it for a moped or a bike because they dont need to be on a major highways. on the moped no one should be driving on the highway with out a driver license, end of story.
